Oh, you sweet summer child… Winners get flown to Hollywood for a weeklong workshop taught by the judges. One of the highlights of workshop week is a gala dinner and awards ceremony. Very glamorous.

@martin-l-shoemaker Yes, I have heard tell--just joking about not knowing. I watched last year's gala on YouTube, and it looked absolutely amazing. I think the only place in the world where they ever treat writers better than that is (maybe) Stockholm, when they give out the Nobel. To do all this for emerging writers is jaw-droppingly kind.

@wulfmoon I certainly enjoy the advice of writing outside your comfort zone, I love exploring different genres and testing my ability to make any story stick, for example, I have a Lovecraftian story in the works and a Mediterranean slice of life story beginning too. I think that any good author should be able to write in a wide range of genres otherwise their creativity could be stumped in the future. I have started the workshop as well, I don't remember where I stopped, maybe not far after the hat story, but I plan on completing it soon because I just really want to learn how to be the best writer I can become.

Every time we write outside of our comfort zone, we are expanding our horizons. Discovery is out on those edges. Get out there far enough, and you'll find things no one else has explored. Be the first. Plant your flag.
Others will notice.
Cheers!

Greetings, all. My name is Jason, and I stumbled upon this forum and contest through chance. I have been worldbuilding and story-writing since around 8 years ago, back when I was much younger and having some simple fun on some Internet forum threads, though the quality of my work only got to acceptable levels within the last couple of years (after I figured out what I want my setting to be like). While I don't plan on going professional any time soon, due to reasons too numerous to be discussed at depth in this post, I do hope to better my writing skills through this forum and the workshop - and perhaps, in time, submit something I am proud to put my name on to the contest.
So how does the FTL drive work?
Splendidly.

Welcome. You stumbled into the right place. This forum is full of great advice, helpful people, and free workshops. It cost nothing to submit, so dust off a story and just do it.

Hello, All! I’m JT. I’m American and a bit of a drifter. My background is primarily that of a military helicopter pilot. For the past three years, I’ve been writing with a more deliberate focus on the craft. I mainly handle fantasy settings, but I try to dabble in a bit of everything. Fairy tale elements frequently make themselves at home in my writing, and I often take old tales in new directions.
I first learned of the contest when I attended my first convention in Chattanooga, TN, where Jody Lynn Nye was the special guest. I just submitted for V42Q1, which is my 3rd submission thus far. I’ve heard this forum mentioned a few times on the podcast, so I thought I’d see what this was all about!

You've come to the right place, JT!
With your helicopter piloting experience, you could write some truly realistic military SF or space exploration stories. Tap into that!
The Forum will help you with Contest knowledge, writing and storytelling skills, and friendship and support. Do take the WotF Online Workshop and learn from the best in the biz! It's FREE!
Glad to have you with us. Keep writing!

Welcome to all new forumites! I'm fairly new myself, but so far I'm really enjoying this community. People here are kind and encouraging.
@ian1109 congrats on your big win! I very much hope to get there myself one day.

Thank you kindly! I've entertained the thought of military SF & the space expo side. I may very well pursue that via a Mobile Suit Gundam type of story-line in the near future!
As for the workshop, I've been through it a few times now. I recommend it anytime I get the chance! It was the first place I learned of the try-fail cycle, and I've walked away with other improvements on my subsequent reviews. It really is a marvelous resource.
Thank you!

Hey! I'm Alix. I've been writing fantasy since I'm eight. My last story got an SHM, and I'm hoping to one day (hopefully soon) get disqualified from here because I get a book published! xoxo
@alix welcome. Congrats on the SHM. That is a big accomplishment and an awesome certificate to have.

We’re glad you found us, George! This contest has launched many pro careers.
Since you mentioned you have many short story sales, do check the contest guidelines to determine if you still qualify. This is an “amateur” contest, but you are allowed *a few* pro short story sales. Read their definition carefully.
All the best!

Must admit I'd never heard of 1632 and Beyond till you mentioned it, and a google later I find this is clearly my ignorance - even this competitions Jody Lynn Nye recently involved! So welcome to this other long running event of WOTF. And I hope you post in the main forum as things come up as thats usually the best way to get answers/help /p>
welcome!

@wulfmoon Yes, I read the rules thoroughly. Disqualifying short stories have to be paid at a minimum of 8 cents per word and only one of mine was. All the others were less, so I guess that means I wasn't a professional for those!

No, I'm sure those were pro sales at the time, but the SFWA pro rates changed, so the WotF rules did as well. Which means you can still enter because the bar was raised.
