I made this post to my Facebook account the other day, but I realized you are the ones that would likely benefit most from it. Many of the Founders are Writers of the Future judges, and they said at Writers of the Future that aside from winning the WotF workshop, there is no better seminar we could attend to help us advance our writing careers. And if you're low income, there are scholarships, and I'm here to tell you the application period just opened. I know one of you is already prepping an application, and I do know that Forum member well enough that I offered to write a letter of recommendation. If you are serious about becoming a professional writer, I highly recommend this seminar. And wouldn't it be cool if we could have a Forum gathering one night if enough of us attended? I started a filking night at the last seminar, and would love to have you join us for singing at the next! Here's the post, and I hope to see you there!

SUPERSTARS Writing Seminar
This is the best writing seminar I have ever attended, and I've been to some great ones over the years. Why the best? The founders are NYT bestselling authors, like Kevin J. Anderson and David Farland and Eric Flint to name a few. They cut through all the BS in writing advice and tell it like it is. And they attract the biggest names in publishing to share their knowledge, from writers to agents to editors to audio to indie. Jim Butcher is there every year. Agent guru Don Maass taught there last year. There were pitch sessions with industry decision makers, like the VP of Audible Originals and the lead editor at Tor. Every panel you go to has the best and brightest in the industry trying to help you get a leg up. And in this industry, such knowledge will save you years in trial and error.
Now, the best *workshop* I have ever attended is the one conducted for a week in Hollywood with Writers of the Future. The problem is, you never know if you'll get to it or not, because you have to win against thousands of contestants every quarter. But the Superstars Seminar is something you *can* determine. You can choose to go. You can choose to change your future with real knowledge by real experts. And instructors at WotF told us after winning WotF, this was the seminar to get to. It's because the knowledge shared here can help you level up.
With so many elite people teaching, you'd think this would promote an elitist atmosphere. It does not. The members and instructors and panelists alike promote a family-like atmosphere--a functional, loving family where everyone is there to help the other. In fact, the members call themselves *tribe* and they mean it! Attending this seminar isn't simply about learning, it's about gaining a family of friends that continue to pool writing and publishing knowledge to help you succeed year after year. I've seen them provide aid to help members in financial straits, to console those who have lost loved ones, and to help members kickstart new ventures. When they say tribe, they put their money where their mouth is. In short, they really mean it.
The seminar costs more than some, and less than others. You get what you pay for. All one can ask is what is moving ahead in your writing career by five to ten years worth? What will it cost you to run down all those dead end alleys in your career before you learn all of this? This seminar will save you years of wandering aimlessly and will set a target for you to focus upon, no matter the level you are presently at. These instructors aren't there to wrap the secrets of success in shrouds of mysticism--they are there to clearly outline direct routes on your map to publishing success. If you are *serious* about your writing, or need the motivation to become serious, this is the place to be. Find a way to attend. That's my advice to you...if you can afford it.
If you are low income, they are taking applications for scholarships right now. Closes September 29th, so hustle hustle. That's how I attended. If I know you well enough, I'll write you a letter of recommendation. But if you have the means, just pull the trigger and sign up now while the rates are lower. And if you live in Colorado where the seminar is held, this is a no-brainer.
I hope to see you there!
Warmth and sunshine,

Thanks for sharing. Would you say it's as useful for someone who only wants to write short stories? Despite what you say about level, I still feel I need to improve my writing before seriously considering something so expensive.
Flights to Denver from the UK are around $450, which isn't too bad if combined with a holiday - something I do to justify attending far-flung events (like a holiday in France to see Joe Hisaishi perform and conduct his Studio Ghibli compositions).
If anyone interested hasn't booked a holiday for next year yet, I'm sure there's lots to see in Colorado. Being an outdoorsy person, here are places I've bookmarked (I have a series of Google Docs that includes places I'd like to visit in almost every country in the world!):
Rifle Falls
Denver: RiNo street art
Rocky Mountain NP: hikes incl Sky Pond, Shark Tooth.
Garden of the Gods
Mesa Verde NP
It would be a mighty fine holiday. I am tempted to go crazy and splurge after pasting that, but I'll see where I'm at in a year or two. Maybe a 2-3 week holiday in Colorado will be in order if I can find cheap accommodation/campsites.

Excellent question. There was a lack in programming on short story writing and composition of short story writing in programming last year, and I commented on it. Many, including David Farland, agreed they needed more programming on the subject and said they would add more this year. They are a proactive bunch, so I assume this will happen. But the seminar really focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to pitch novels, to get good agents, to understand contracts (Eric Flint put up one of his on the big screen and walked through every detail), to create good covers and such for indie, lots on systems for writing novels, and audiobook discussion as well. The Craft Day has small workshops that focus both on writing professionally, on the business of writing, and creating novels.
So I suppose my answer is if you're strictly going to be a short story guy--nothing wrong with that!--this conference will have less benefit to you. It still has benefits--I took a great "hooks" workshop with David Farland that totally applies to short or long fiction. And I got to meet David Farland, which I felt was essential to helping me win WotF...except I won between earning the scholarship and attending, so that became moot! Still glad I got to visit with him before the week in Hollywood--it put us on a friendship level before I got to the WotF workshop.
In view of the expense from the distance you would have to travel, and your present goals, I'd save my money in your particular case. Take one of Dave's online courses instead. You can get some one-on-one time in some of those, which can help you understand what Dave is looking for in a story. Honestly, everyone here should be trying to get into one of Dave's workshops, whether at Superstars or elsewhere.
I hope that helps!
Cheers!

Wow! Garden of the Gods brings back memories from my time at Ft. Carson. Some friends and I would spend our days hang-gliding from the cliffs in the park. That was after an accident got us banned from the base.

It's funny, I lived in Colorado until I was 23 and I don't think I've ever been to Garden of the Gods. Given my split interest in short stories and my drive to become a published novelist, I know Superstars would be a great opportunity for me. Personally, there's little I've found as far as craft goes that doesn't apply to both short and long form. Pacing is different, and there's more space for some things, but the skills are pretty similar. Thoughts? The business side of this workshop, though, sounds really helpful.

I have thoughts. Never ask if I have thoughts, you'll get them.
At other conventions and seminars, you might have a few star guests, and they'll do their famous author interview from the stage, and maybe you'll hear them on a panel, packed in with five to seven writers that are often intermediate writers trying to figure out how to get where that big name author is at. You will learn something, but it's unlikely you'll get any one-on-one time with those guest speakers, and they normally aren't there to teach, just to be the guest and say a few words from the stage and panels and then get whisked away by their handlers in charge of protecting them from the crowds at the con.
Superstars had about 400 attendees this year. You aren't fighting massive crowds to get in to learn from guest speakers. Honestly, the name authors aren't there as guests so much as they are there as teachers. They have been invited to help you to succeed, just like at Writers of the Future. It really is about you, just like it is at Writers of the Future. Perhaps this is because so many of the Founders are WotF winners and judges, and the WotF spirit permeates this event. David Farland is one of those Founders. Eric Flint is another. Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, all WotF judges and Superstars Founders. And they all teach during Craft Day, so you can take advanced courses with them. Some of the biggest names in Indie publishing are there as well, and they teach how to use the various platforms to succeed in that realm. And we all go to lunch and dinner and hang out in the bar, where you can make new friends that will be with you for years to come, and some of those new friends might actually be able to give you a leg up in your career.
For scholarship winners, Kevin J. Anderson has the judging panel invite you to lunch, and he comes along just to chat with all the winners and get to know you. You get to have lunch with one of the top 100 writers in this country (I think he ranks around #40 if memory serves). Many Superstars members have sold novels to Kevin's WordFire press, and I think a lot of it has to do with Kevin getting to know you and seeing you are not only a good writer, but also a good person to work with. In this industry, getting to know and to be known by those that are at the top is more important than you will probably ever realize. That's because the speculative fiction industry is really a small fishbowl, everyone knows one another, and they know who is up and coming as well. Pay it forward mentality is huge in our industry. But if you want someone to pay it forward to you, well, they have to know who you are.
As to writing itself, what Becky says is true. There is shared knowledge from short fiction to long. But there are specialties unique to each as well, and novels, being bigger, need more poles to keep the Big Top up. So there is quite a bit of focus on novels, especially the marketing and business side. Honestly, the title of the Seminar says it all. The people teaching are Superstars themselves in their various fields, and they are there to help you level up in your career, wherever you are at. And all the people attending? They are upward and mobile writers, just like you, and you couldn't find a more perfect set of peers to make friends with to help you along the path. MANY of them are Writer of the Future winnners.
*That* should tell you all you need to know.
I hope to see some of you there. When I do, that too will say much about you.
All the beast!

It helps! Dave did a workshop over here last year, but that was over $1000 - so cheaper to fly to Colorado and pay for Superstars! I signed up to audit some of Dave's workshops, so I'm sure they'll be useful even without his feedback. I'm attending a flash workshop from Smokelong Quarterly's editor soon, so that should be helpful.
Do you see yourself going to that workshop event that's only for pro authors one day Wulf? I think I heard about it in a podcast with Preston and Dean Wesley-Smith. Now that sounds super-awesome!

Keep it in mind for future years when the babysitting is easier. I learned so much when I went - would love to go again but I've had little things like "being 8 1/2 months pregnant that week" come up in the last couple years, or "having a child under one". Superstars is well established and not going anywhere so it'll be ready for me when I can get back.
I love all the instructors but I thought Eric Flint was the best part. Everyone else is all "rah rah cheerleader go you we all rock!" and he's this grumpy surly voice of, "yeah, publishing is hard work".

Glad you got to attend, Kate. Thanks for pointing out that if you can't make it to the next Superstars, there's always goal setting for future years. I liked the "you can do it" atmposphere, because the entire seminar focuses on boosting morale and encouraging you to not just talk about your dreams, but to achieve them. And then there's Eric Flint in his bowler hat, the crusty curmudgeon everyone loves because he tells you like it is. He won Writers of the Future 26 years ago (1st place, Vol. 9), and he knows the tough row you have to hoe, and minces no words. He's a good counterpoint to the "you can do it" cheering; he will tell you, you can do it, but you better be prepared to work long hard hours. He did his hour at the WotF workshop as well, and that pretty much sums up his message. Oh, and he told us to get to Superstars, and he wasn't self-promoting, simply responding to a question. He said the Writers of the Future workshop is the best workshop we could attend. But now that we have been, he said next the best was Superstars, and he highly recommended it.
I enjoyed his advice at the WotF workshop. Straightforward, doesn't mince words. What you see is what you get. I like people like that.
So here's the thing. Attending the best workshop in the country--Writers of the Future--is out of your hands, it's determined by people other than you. But Superstars is something you can choose to attend, something that could give you the connections and knowledge to change everything. I had 0 dollars when I applied--if you've been listening to my WotF podcasts, you know my story. I just knew I had to be there, and worked to find a way. It wasn't easy. After being awarded the scholarship, I still had to pay for airfare, hotel, meals, and my Craft Day, which is addtional, but got me a class with David Farland. In my case, I won Writers of the Future less than two weeks after I was awarded the scholarship. The prize money helped so much, and it sounds odd, but it felt like I was being rewarded for taking the blind leap from the cliff and hoping the parachute would appear. My leap of faith worked, and I think it did because I knew where I needed to be at that moment in my career, and I worked hard to get to the place I knew in my heart I needed to be.
When you feel that calling, listen to it. And do everything in your power to answer the call.
All the beast,

THIS JUST IN! I asked at the last Superstars for programming on short story, as many new writers need that. Both Kevin and Dave agreed the seminar needed short story coverage, and I've just previewed the Craft Day roster. DAVID FARLAND is teaching a Craft Day session on Crafting the Perfect Short Story!!! So here's your chance to learn from the master, so that you might craft the perfect story that will win Writers of the Future! (Or anything else your heart desires, but hey, you're here, so I figure you kinda' want to win this thing.
Superstars registration is open, but Craft Day registration opens Saturday or Sunday. Some of these classes fill up quick, so if you're teetering on the edge, now's the time to jump! Alas, scholarship people will have to wait until they find out if they were awarded a scholarship, but I won a scholarship last year, and I had no problem getting Dave's craft day, he had a big room. So, as Ferris Beuller said, "If you have the means, I highly recommend it." And if you don't, there's the scholarship. Application period ends this month, and you have several moving pieces to put together for the app, so hustle!
I hope to welcome some of you into the Tribe! See you in Colorado Springs next February! Next stop after, the WotF stage!

I keep waffling back and forth on whether or not to apply for this, to the point where I've written the essays as a thought experiment. Probably will put the app in, if I can get the letters I need. Doesn't mean I'll win, of course, but it can't hurt to try. (I have a friend who surprised me by volunteering to babysit if I was able to go, which makes things easier to think about.)

I am dying to go, but I am committed to go to the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators winter conference the day SUPERSTARS ends. My budget and my family's tolerance allows me to go to one conference each year.
Maybe I can go in 2021, but that seems so far away.
I hope all of you get there and get the scholarships you need. For those of you who can't go, in the past I have bought the MP3s of the conference. They are super informative. Of course, going in person gives you so much more, but MP3s is an economical option. I am going to give them to myself for Christmas.

Hi, Tracy! The scholarship only covers registration, which is the seminar and extracurricular activities at night. Craft Day is separate, an additional fee, and was added on after members said they wanted workshops by the pro's. Last year, Craft Day cost $300 and included one master class in the morning, and one in the afternoon. If you won the scholarship, Craft Day was discounted to $200 for you.
You still have to figure out airfare, lodging, and food on your own. Transportation from Denver Airport to Colorado Springs is gratis, made possible by much coordination from gracious local alumni drivers. On game night (and/or filking night by yours truly) they charge $20 for all the pizza (and soda) you can eat. They put out wonderful veggie trays as well. For scholarship winners, an anonymous donor picks up that tab.
Superstars does have an FB group where members call for roommates to split costs. Some do nearby Air BnB homes and split between several--very cost effective.
I hope that helps. It's good to count the cost. Winning the scholarship is only part of the equation, but for low income, it can take the seminar from impossible to within reach for some. And if you're seeking to reach the next level, it may well be worth the reach.
Cheers!

Hadn't checked the forums in a while so I guess I'm late to the party. But I signed up a couple weeks ago, so will hopefully get to meet some of you there =)

Yup this will be the first time.
I waffled back and forth on this something fierce, but I ended up trying for the scholarship--and I just got a phone call telling me I got in! Apparently, it even includes the craft day this year. Finding the funds to get there will be an adventure, but I'm going to wait until I get all of the info to worry about that (I'll be getting an e-mail with registration details and the like soon).

If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. ~ Mark Twain
