I wanted to share this resource with ya'll. It's a website called Slick Write. I use it on every writing project. (this is not a paid promo, I just really like it.)
It's free and very easy to use. You copy and paste your writing into a dialogue box, click the green Check button, and viola! It will analyze your writing for grammatical errors and stylistic weaknesses--pointing out adverbs, redundancies, and passive voice. It's not sophisticated, but for a free tool, I love it. It's a great way to see your writing anew before sending it off to betas or competitions. It can't replace a real editor, but it can get you started.

**edit** please note that violas do not play, rather, a French man appears and shouts "Zut alors, I have never seen work of such stunning magnificence! Voilà!"

Grammarly is another good resource, one I use myself at the end of my projects. Amazing the things you catch sometimes.

It only plays viola if you're work is full of errors. If it's good, it plays violin 😉

@gideonpsmith @time I'm lol-ing my butt off this morning. I think when you write something good, somewhere, the Battle of 1812 is playing.

@gideonpsmith @time I would also like to add that I've seen it spelled wah-lah, so I am CERTAIN I am only the second worst offender in this universe.

I speak a tiny bit of French, and that makes my ears hurt! ?

Oh and I'm certain my posts are riddled with this kind of thing - for my work I have to type "shoulder" a lot and for some reason I almost always type "shoudler" instead
I just joined in the joke as viola is the butt of jokes in orchestra as always playing out of tune and making lots of errors and the violinists always think they are better, so the orchestra-stereotype-humor seemed to fit so well here

@gideonpsmith Haha, I had no idea. I love this sort of specialized insider-humor.

Lol. When I saw your post, I read vi o la. Even though I knew what you meant, I wasn't sure of the correct spelling.

As a viola player, I can sadly attest to this. But it's all in good nature /p>

Then I ran my winner through and it's 83 and 3.3. Easier to read than my middle grade!

@Sade, I just used Slick Write to evaluate the story I'm planning to submit for this quarter, and Mon Dieu! The multitude of colors splashed over my text was something to behold. The analysis was accompanied by the sound of clashing cymbals, with nary a violin to be heard.
It found adverbs I had overlooked (but never a 'very', I'm happy to say). It seemed displeased about my abundant use of prepositional phrases. Dialog and sentence structure fared better.
I have a bit of rewriting ahead of me. Thank you for suggesting this useful tool.
@emlouviere You're welcome! I'm pleased you found it useful; I really enjoy it as well. It helps me to spot weaknesses I wouldn't otherwise detect. I also really enjoy the flow analysis, it shows me where my writing needs a boost. Thanks for telling me about your experience! 😉

@emlouviere lol @ the clashing cymbals I'm guilty of passive voice, so I'm guessing mournful oboes play in the background of my analysis.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like a fantastic resource for writers looking to polish their work before sending it out into the world. Having a tool that can help identify grammatical errors and stylistic weaknesses can be incredibly valuable, especially for those who may not have access to professional editors.
