Oh my, I see I have neglected checking this thread. Greetings to everyone who has just joined! You sound like an interesting bunch and I hope to see you getting out there posting more to the forums. Happy writing and best of luck in the contest!

Hey all.

I ran into a past semi-finalist on a completely different website, one with nothing to do with writing, so I was pretty excited to meet someone else who was interested in cranking out their own science fiction. When I mentioned that I had a short story in the works and was planning to send it to Asimov's, he recommended that I submit it to Writer's of the Future first. "For anything you're really proud of" I think he said.

So, I became aware of this little contest about a week before the Q4 deadline and sprinted through revisions for the story. May not be the best way to go about winning, but I'm glad I cleaned it up in time, even if a more careful eye would have been preferable during the editing process.

What I've seen so far has really impressed me. I look forward to keeping tabs on how this thing goes wotf008

Voidfire, that sounds great! Glad you made your way over here. I had a similar experience running into WotF folks who nudged me over here. That was just a few weeks before the qtr 4 deadline as well!

Ah, thanks a lot! And it seems that WotF writers make a habit of bringing more people into the fold, lol.

Howdy!

My name is Addison, and I work for a small newspaper up in northern Minnesota. I submitted something on a whim to Fireside Magazine earlier this year, and it was accepted so I figured it might be time to try taking writing seriously. So here I am! On Oct. 30 I was trying to figure out why rejections were being reported after only 30 days, and stumbled upon this forum. I've been sneakily reading as a guest ever since. 😀

Looking forward to meeting you folks!

Nice to meet you, Tom!

We really are a dinky operation. My title is Graphic Artist, but in reality I also do the typesetting, do the layouts for both our newspaper and our shopper, and whatever editing happens to fall upon me. Small as we are (city population of 1,000 if that gives a hint), we've been around since 1896. It's a blast looking through all those old issues. 😀

We're dinky too. I'm the editor-in-chief, publisher, photographer, columnist, reporter, advertising sales manager, and just about everything else. Smile

Hi, I've entered the contest for the first time this quarter. I've been browsing the boards occasionally to see if I can pick up any news on the judging process and just to get more of a feel for the environment. It's fun reading everyone's rejectomancy. I will probably enter when I have a suitable story completed at the time of a quarter ending, rather than every single time. Good luck with your writing everyone!

Welcome, fihr! I'm sure you've already seen ut, but we'll all be over in the Jibber Jabber thread anxiously awaiting results (though we should be writing), which will probably be coming any day now if recent speculation is anything to go by. Good luck!

Hello there,

I should have introduced myself by now, but forgot to do it, so here it goes: My first submission to the contest received Honorable Mention in Q4 of 1985 (No, that's not a typo!). This makes me a V*E*R*Y (note the emphasis, just in case you didn't catch that) young looking kind'a older guy. No, don't go imagining I've been obsessively submitting since -- I just got distracted by other things and... well, I'm back! And glad to be among writers with such talent and drive to succeed.

I'm a biopsychologist and teach psychology at a community college in LA.

Oh yeah, I'm originally French. But I can speak and write English weally weally good now.

Hello, my name is Angel. I am a high school junior at the moment, and this quarter I will be submitting my first submission to this contest. I do not have very much writing experience, but I enjoy writing none the less, and I am very glad I found out about this contest because it gives me more motivation to work on writing stories in my spare time. I don't talk much (either online or offline), so I am not sure exactly how often I will be posting on this forum; however, I will probably be looking at this forum a good bit because seeing that other people have been writing helps to keep me motivated.
It is nice to meet you all.

Welcome, Angel! Good luck with your first entry. You're in good company here and can learn a lot from other writers on the forum (I know I did). This contest is certainly a worthwhile pursuit, even before you win.

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking here for a little while, and finally decided to participate. wotf007

I'm not a metermaid, and I don't really know why "metermaid" was the first word to come to mind when it asked me for a username. I work a boring desk job and decided a while back that, since I read so much, maybe writing would be a good outlet. My background has little to do with writing, so I'm pretty solidly in the "beginner" category here.

I submitted the first story I'd ever completed for the last quarter and got a reject in the first round. Oh well. Looking back on it, I'm already cringing realizing how bad it was! Hopefully in another few months I'll be able to cringe at the stuff I'm writing now. At least I can feel like I'm getting better. wotf017

This seems like a great community. I'm looking forward to contributing (hopefully something worthwhile)!

Best,
Metermaid

Welcome, Metermaid. Plenty of fun and learning to be had here. And don't worry about getting rejected. Just write the best story you can, send it out, cringe or clap or do whatever you have to do, and then write another. You will get better if you persevere. See ya' in the threads!

Heya,

I've been lurking since I entered Q3 and have been creeping around more and more. I'm a sneak, I know. But the first step to rehabilitation is acceptance right? I'm a code monkey by trade, but writer by heart.

I also hate talking about myself in intros, so I'm just going to awkwardly shuffle away now.
