I've posted on the forum a few times, but I never introduced myself. In order not to be completely antisocial, I will now do so. I am a lawyer near Washington, DC. I have entered the contest twice so far, although nothing but rejections have been forthcoming. I don't have so much time to write, but when an idea strikes me, and I do write a story, I will try my luck with WOTF. I think I will enter this quarter.
Welcome, Always Adventure. Yes, you must enter each quarter. It is the best way to win!
See you on the forums. That's where all the action is.

Sounds like a plan to me!
(on a not particularly related note, can pen names be used for this?)

Absolutely, just so long as you still meet the requirements.
That is: you can't enter under a pen-name if you're a pro author under your real name, etc.

A guy named Chrome Oxide was a published finalist.
Maybe I'll enter as Bob Writer and blow everyone's mind if I win.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone's doing this already.

Welcome, Always! Don't mind the rejections. Just keep entering. I received nothing but rejections for years before my first HM, and last year's gold winner went straight from rejections to first place. Never stop writing because you never know if the next story will be the one that wins.
Maybe I'll enter as Bob Writer and blow everyone's mind if I win.

Since Bob Writer joined before Ishmael, that must mean Bob Writer is the real one and Ishmael his alter ego!

Ishmael is certainly somebody's alter ego.
Actually 'Oh no I'm not! ' escaped from the blog section.

Could be that Writer Bob was the scout that checked everything out for this altered ego. (spelling done on purpose)
But escaped from the blog section????? I mean really old chap, how provincial.

If we don't keep them shut up in the blog section the pesky little blighters get everywhere. Next thing you know they'll be writing to the newspapers.
What's that? Already did? Oh no, there's going to be trouble. If there's one guy that people really hate to hear from it's an economist with bad news.
You mean there's some other kind of economist?
Just forget that I spoke.

Hello. It seems that we are a global community. My background is in technology and government, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I submitted my first story with a blind eye to what is 'expected'. Still, it plays to my dreams of everlasting significance to the human species.
I'm not sure what anyone is looking for in a story, but if it makes me cry while writing it, then surely it will have an impact on some readers. I love you all for aspiring to significance, and I hope to reach you with a message. If not today, or this year, then I will keep trying...
Hug you all.
Welcome to the forum Icynova.
You've found an empathic community that will help in your learning and growth as a writer and fellow human.

Welcome, Icy.
My wife's from Colorado Springs, although now we're both in Oregon.
If you haven't submitted your story for Q2 V31 yet (deadline end of March), you might want to consider checking out the critique section here to see whether other entrants think what you're turning in is in line with the contest's expectations.
Good luck to you in any case!

Welcome, Icy!
If you've successfully struck the emotional chords you mention in your post, I think you have a good shot. Of course, emotional appeal is only one aspect of a story, but it is a useful one. As Frost said: "no pain/joy/tears for the writer, no pain/joy/tears for the reader."
Good luck
Hi - time to stop lurking and start participating. Despite my call sign I'm male and English. I live to confuse. I've submitted to the contest a few times now and again (never managed regularly. Must manage regularly). I've gathered a couple of HM's along the way plus some R's I'm trying to forget about. And I survived the first cut this round, which made me happy. You all seem like nice supportive people so it would be good to join in.

This seems to be the place to make introductions, so - hi! I'm new to all aspects of this thing except the writing, but when I found this forum, I thought I ought to join. I actually just finished my first ever entry for Writers of the Future, and I'm anticipating being around here for the forseeable future. Looking forward to sharing this experience with you fine folks!
Happy to welcome you to the forum Meg. Good luck on your entry.
