HM Q2 Vol.28 "Unmasking the Masker"
Hey all!
This is my first time writing on the forum, but I hope to visit often. I am so excited because I got my first HM last year (2nd quarter 2010). It was just the inspiration I needed after having entered...wait for it...16 times! Yikes! I first started entering way...way...way back in 1986, but gave up. I started again a couple of years ago and on my 4th try, got my first HM. Yahoo!!! Now I'm still waiting for a response on my 2011 Q1 entry. I've never had to wait this long before. Is there anyone out there who has gotten a response for their 2011 Q1 entry (rejection or otherwise?) I'm making myself crazy waiting to see if I made the cut, or if my entry was lost. Just wondering... Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.
best of luck to you all!

Hi Preston. Wow, there have been some records, in terms of winners who entered over and over again, but if/when you win you may take the cake for longest entering (oldest entering?) contestant. Good luck! Nice to have you here.

Coming up: "The Chaplain's War," from

Welcome, Preston. Sounds like you've got a similar history to mine. First discovered the contest about the same time (I think it was in an ad in Asimov's) as you, tried for a long time, gave up, got a live, and decided a couple years ago to try this writing thing again...
Glad to have you with us. Welcome to the forum, and good luck!
Welcome, Preston! There have been a few sets of results that've come in, one in early March, one on the 31st, and apparently more came in just yesterday. There are threads on the "Honorable Mention, Semi Finalist, Finalist" board for every quarter, where people post their angst and impatience, and eventually, results. Here's the one for Q1:

Hi, I'm Mike, and I'm a scifioholic.
I'm Mike Pinkerton, currently a high schooler, just got accepted to Chapman University's Dodge College for Screenwriting.
I'm a raygun gothic nerd, and love a lot of older science fiction.
Not saying I don't love modern stuff, but I prefer the old, atomic age. I guess you could say "The Old Future."
Welcome, Mike!

Hi David,
I know you from OWW as well. Welcome. This is quite the interesting group here.
I'm struggling to figure out how I know you, sorry. What handle do you go by there, Dawn/Kat? Do you recognize me from the workshop, the email group, or the FB page (where I admin)?
Cheers,

HM Q2 Vol.28 "Unmasking the Masker"
Hi, Mike! Welcome to the forum, and good luck!
(Used to be a screenwriter myself, so enjoy your studies!)
Hello! I'm Martin L. Shoemaker, joined the forums yesterday.
I'm yet another OWW member. I ended up here indirectly via Kevin O. McLaughlin http://kevinomclaughlin.com/, another OWW member. He pointed out Dean Wesley Smith's blog; and from Dean, I learned more about WotF. Since then, reading Brad's story and Jason's story from the banquet last year got me hooked. I had to learn more!
It's kinda strange how WotF slipped past me. I've been reading SF since 1972, for pity's sake, so I thought I had some perspective on the market. In my defense, the contest started while I was a busy college student. And I saw the anthologies in the bookstores sometimes. But I didn't realize there was a contest involved.
All right, all right, I was dumb as a post! But a post can learn, right?
I've been away from writing and from OWW for a few months because I was learning to write Windows Phone games. Now that I have some games published (and making not very much money, but I wrote them for the fun), I'm back to writing fiction.
Besides programming and writing, I'm an itinerant UML instructor, and the author/artist of the world's first UML comic strip. If you're not in software, that probably doesn't mean much to you. If you are in software, that probably has you quietly edging away from me and hoping I don't hurt someone with something pointy.

Hello Mr. Shoemaker, glad to have you with us.
I'm in the "I have no idea what UML is" category, unfortunately. Note to self: get more tech savvy.

Thanks! But please, call me Martin. I use my full name for business identity purposes, but I freak out when people call me "Mr. Shoemaker" in non-business circles.
UML isn't really technical at all; but since it came out of the technical realm, people see it that way. It's really a graphical language for describing things and actions. If my blog/comic strip weren't broken right now, I would plug it here so you could see what I mean. I even use it sometimes for diagramming my stories.
