Welcome aboard, James!
Looks like you are on your way to writing your one million words! Well done! And teaching kids how to make music, and building instruments? Kudos to you! I think you'd really enjoy the subject matter of a story I wrote that may or may not be coming soon to a magazine near you!
Do post in the quarterly topic you plan to enter. And not to discourage your 17K stories (I submitted MANY of those to this contest), but you might want to look at my Super Secret on that. It's meant to help, and I hope it does. In the end, we all walk our own path, but if a
Sherpa says, "Hey, boss, less people die taking this fork up the mountain," it's at least worth a listen. I wish you the best of success!
You can get critiques on your work in the Story Exchange folder. People like doing equal sized swaps--another benefit to writing "shorter" short stories.
Write on!

Hey, everyone. I'm dying to see the results of Q2, so I decided to join the forum to distract myself. I thought I had a good first submission. There was one element I was unsure if others would find effective, at the time I thought it worked well.

Hello! I've been stalking the forum for a few days as my twitchy-ness for Q2 results grows, so I figured I should just create an account since I'm spending so much time here. This is my third submission, but by far the one I have the highest hopes for, so we'll see what happens! I have one honorable mention and one rejection under my belt, and I plan to keep adding to my submission numbers in the coming years.
I'm a speculative fiction writer for the most part, so this contest has always been right up my alley, but I write a lot of poetry as well. I still consider myself pretty new to the writing world; I've only been writing seriously for five or so years and I've only completed a few manuscripts, so I definitely have a ways to go and plenty of growing to do. I'm a native Texan, so expect to see me write "y'all" in every third comment, and I'm a lover of birds, hence the username.
Just thought I would pop in and introduce myself before I go back to refreshing my inbox. I look forward to seeing y'all around the forum!
Welcome aboard, NeighborlyRaven!
I used to talk to a raven that would come sit in a big Douglas fir next to our house every morning. Smart birds!
You are also smart--you joined the Forum! You'll find lots of support in times of twitching here! Do comment in the Q you enter. You'll find the huddled masses there right now.
Don't forget to take the Writers of the Future Online Course! It's a taste of the week long workshop winners get in Hollywood!
See you on that stage!

Thanks for the greeting. I signed up for the writing course already and have been working my way through it. I've been stalking the forums for some time now and finally decided to join.
As for a bit about me, I tend to write thrillers, sci-fi, and horror and I am halfway through writing the first draft of a Crime/Thriller novel. I think it is coming together rather nicely. I hope others will enjoy it!
Dropping in to say hello. "Hello."
Been entering WotF every quarter for the past few years and have been hyper-checking the boards when result times draw near. I've collected a few Rs, a fair share of HMs, and a couple of SHMs.
I've tried joining a few times in the past, but my bull-headed insistence on my profile name must've always flagged the bot filter (understandably). Thank goodness for the addition of the signup security question.
Take care,

Hi, I just started writing this year and submitted to the contest. I really like the idea of being part of writing communities, because it’s such a solitary art and that makes it hard to touch base with others in our field.
There’s also something exciting about doing competitions, even if you don’t place, playing the game with others is more enticing than just submitting stories to magazines. It keeps things fun and lighthearted.
I’m in my 20s and read sci-fi and literary fiction. I like a good combination of the two more than anything. I try to write both.
Impressive resume AE. I enjoy seeing new members with both short and storied submission histories.
Thanks. When writing about myself, I tend to keep things brief. They'll be plenty of time for me to drone on about other stuff in the future.

Thank you. Gonna keep at it until I'm disqualified. Then, if I pro out (fingers crossed), I'll check the contest rules from time to time to see if they've upped the pro qualifications.
Thanks for standing in the light! Nice collection of honors! Never miss a quarter and you will win this!
This is the way.

Hello everyone! I've been writing a while, 3-4 years. I'm old, got into writing late, have never wanted to write a novel. My core capability is figure sculpture, ceramic and mixed media, fantasy and science fiction topics. Started writing back stories for original characters I've sculpted. Fumbling along getting both good advice and bad. Anyway Q2 was my first submission to any publisher ever. Received an Honorable Mention. In the meantime, sold a story (token payment) to the 2020 NIWA Anthology, "Escape". I guess the practicing has paid off. Submitted to Q3 also. Still have a day job and maybe someday I'll take the Bradbury challenge (will probably have to wait for retirement) but for now I write a couple of stories a month. I type and think slow. Right now I can't sculpt, I take Adult Ed classes at the local community college. All that creative urge goes in to writing.

Hello, all!
I've been writing on again, off again since I was a teenager. After publishing in college mags, I never successfully published anywhere and in Sep 2019 submitted to WotF for the first time. I got an honorable mention but was so disappointed in myself and the story because I knew it could be better. My recent submission in June, with a revised version (same idea, same background tech, but very different story) isn't quite there yet but I'm getting closer. Why is it the last hour, before submission is due, I realize all the things horribly wrong with my writing?
Anyway, am very happy to have discovered this forum. Thanks for having me here!

Good day,
I was recently in a class Wulf taught and I really enjoyed what I heard and thought I might as well get into a community that seems to be helping folks find themselves in their writing. My name is Jayrod P. Garrett and I'm a performance poet who is working on trying to get published as a storyteller. I've only "finished" one short story ever and I know what needs to be done to make it better, but I haven't gotten back to it. I'd like to start work on a story about Samurai who has lost his honor and the only way they perceive regaining it is to perform Seppuku and the impact that has on his little sister who wants to follow in his footsteps as a Samuari. Direction on where to go in the forum to get help with that would be much appreciated. See you soon!
Cheers and Stay Safe

Awesome you found us, Jayrod! Welcome to the Forum, where all your wildest dreams can come true! Loved having you as my moderator for the master class--everything went off without a hitch. Thank you!
I heard you wrote a poem based on my painting, "One Chance in Hell," that I displayed to make one of my points. I wasn't able to read chat comments during class, so feel free to post it right here if you feel comfy. Would love to see it!
Do check out the critique swap area. We probably need a story idea area, where people could talk about story issues like the one you have asked (loved Shogun, btw.) Just make a post with your question above in the appropriate category, and I'm sure you'll find help! There's some smart cookies in here.
Since you now know about the Super Secrets, do check out the topic. If you go to the very first post, there's a table of contents to help you navigate. The workshop is finishing out the year for current members, but do read their work, like on Ping-Pong Dialogue or KYD. It's excellent!
So happy to see you here!
Cheers!

Hello everyone!
At the Superstars event this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wulf Moon. He suggested that I enter the WOTF contest. I did so, and to my surprise, I made finalist this quarter. This week, Wulf kindly invited me to join this group.
I write of rogues, rebels, and renegades across time and space. My debut novel, THE BRASS QUEEN, will be published in January 2021. It's a rollicking steampunk romp set in an alternate 1897, in which a fiery British aristocrat and an inept US spy search for a stolen invisibility serum that could spark a global war.
I'm a British voice actor currently based in Connecticut, USA. I also work at my local library, where I help folks to find their next good read.
It's lovely to meet you!
All the best,
Elizabeth Chatsworth

Welcome aboard, Elizabeth! So glad you joined our group! You are a GREAT WRITER!
Folks, David Farland knows I do freelance editing, and referred her to me at Superstars for some editing work on Elizabeth's novel. I took one look at her writing and asked her WHY ISN'T SHE ENTERING WRITERS OF THE FUTURE??? She took my advice, entered, and made finalist ON HER FIRST TRY! Told you she was good! And now she has taken my advice once again. So happy to have you with us, Elizabeth!
Do wander our hallowed halls. Do share in the quarter topic you are entering--most of the support chat happens there. We welcome your voice, and huge congratulations on your upcoming steampunk novel!

Dude! Is there anywhere on the net that you don't hang out? You're like, everywhere, man.
Well, I've managed to write a few things, get them published in a few places and I'm working on other bits. I've submitted to WotF a few times over the years with submissions in for the 3rd and 4th quarters this year.
I try my best to stay off social media as much as possible because it isn't much more than a soul-sucking black hole. I'd suspect that this forum would be more helpful than wasteful, so here I am.
Most folks from my last few lifetimes (military/civilian/writing) tend to just call me Hillbilly.
So Hey y'all...I'm Hillbilly, and I freely admit that I have a writing addiction.
