Brad offers a lot of insight in this interview:

Awesome interview. And it's great to see someone as successful as Brad is a 'burster', as he says. I'm the same way. I keep struggling to write constantly, as authors like DWS suggest, but my writing comes in bursts as well. I'll work on a short story, usually for about 2 weeks to a month, then I go weeks without doing anything more than brainstorming and planning before I start the next.

In truth, I am working to get myself out of the habit of bursting. It's like pulling teeth. But I have so much work being asked of me by editors right now, I can't afford to not give myself some kind of schedule, set goals, plant butt in chair and grind it out, etc. As Kevin Anderson would say, a good problem to have.

Pssst... Dean has recently admitted to being a burster himself. He CAN do steady work (witness his recent ghostwritten novel in 10 days); but left to his own devices, he dawdles and then bursts.

He also said any technique that works for you, works. If bursting gets you writing and nose-to-the-grindstone blocks you, then you have to consider whether bursting is bad or not.

Me, I'm trying to find a happy medium around a day job that's recently running 60+ hours per week.
