Hey yall! I'm having a little trouble with setting an avatar. I want to make this my avatar:
But whenever I put it in it says the url is invalid.
People assume my writing is a logical progression of words from which meaning can be derived, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.
Works

How do you insert your avatar picture? Can't seem to figure it out.
1) Click "User Control Panel"
2) Click "profile"
3) Click "edit avatar"
4) Type in the URL that contains your image.
(If you need somewhere on the web to put your image, you can e-mail it to me and I will upload it to web space I have. )

If the dimensions of your image are larger than the permitted size, which from memory is somewhere around 110 square, the program will try to scale it down for you (I think). If it's struggling to do this, perhaps your avatar is very big. If not, then it should work if you write in scaled down dimensions into the two boxes below the line into which you enter the URL. Me, I like my image to be small so as not have all the ladies swooning and all the men jealous over how handsome I am! (And modest.) So mine is 70 x 75.

Thanks, Ishmael. I'll try it, after the swoon has subsided.

I am actually a gator fan, as in Florida. I enjoy reading your posts for they are entertaining.
As soon as I learn this avatar thing my alter ego will make itself known.

You could do with making that list a bit longer, actually, Gator. Who's on it now? Tina? Evil Martin? You could start by putting me on it.

I'm sure you are, he/she/it just hasn't hatched yet.
I'm eight years old you know. Going on 66 million.
Yes I know, dear, it seems like 66 million anyway.
Heard that. Definitely not going on my "not to be eaten" list now.

I have to hatch my own personality before I can hope for an alter ego. Trust the process, right?
I have to hatch my own personality before I can hope for an alter ego. Trust the process, right?
Indeed. Erm.
Gator started out as a mere avatar, then became so much more...
In fact, she wasn't so much hatched, as bought. Even though it was 8 years ago I vividly remember buying her. Her mugshot was displayed on a wall in Second Life, alongside the mugshots of a whole range of other googly-eyed animal avatars by the same maker. The frog was quite nice too but there was no doubt in my mind she was the cutest. But did I really want to be an alligator? Who on earth wants to be an alligator? I knew nothing of alligators. I'm British, I don't even remember seeing a real life alligator. Surely they're just these crude, cruel, stupid, aggressive, giant, ugly things that sometimes eat people? (Wrong, of course, I know better now, they are complex creatures, are rather timid, have their caring side and even use tools! ) Hmm, but being a gator could be amusing, said a small voice somewhere. So I bought her. And so it began.

Btw, I'd always supposed the Gator avatar was due to your name being Caiman -- unless that's a pen name and it's the other way round.

All clever remarks aside I really don't understand what's happening here.
I am constantly trying to create an avatar but I keep getting the url is not valid message even though I'm copying it straight from the internet.
I've tried using my photos, using my videos from you-tube, nothing transfers, I don't get it.
I know one day I'll be past all this struggling but till then the whole process sucks.

I haven't tried an avatar yet, but are you putting in a url to a page that contains the image (.htm, aspx, etc.) or to the image itself (.gif, .jpg, etc.)?
I think I initially had trouble finding a version of my usual user icon that would work. I finally used my Twitter profile picture--but I clicked on the image itself (to make it bigger, although this might not be necessary) and then right clicked and went to "Copy Image URL," rather than copying the address out of the web address bar. Perhaps something like that would work for you?

I can't remember whether this system is one, but I find a common reason for getting the 'invalid' message is that the system was already supplying the prefix 'http:' so that when I copy a URL it ends up with a double 'http:' at the front, which is of course invalid but hard to notice!

Storysinger,
Is it this one?
Some websites don't allow you to direct link. It causes all kinds of additional bandwidth that they may have to pay for, so they turn that option off.
Easy enough, but if you want to piggyback from mine, it's already uploaded, and it's tiny, and no one visits my business page, so my traffic is minimal.
Copy/paste that URL in the avatar section in your control panel.
or download the image and host it yourself.
Either will do the trick.

Yes, just be sure not to repeat it in front of her majesty. She doesn't remember that day, or so she claims. She thinks she was hatched like a regular gator.
