I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to do this. It wants an internet link? I only have it on my computer. Is there a way to just upload?

Confused non-techie throwing out a help semaphore. wotf027

Thanks!

Rebecca, do you have a picture on your website or blog? If so, just go to it and copy that url. If not, well, if you have a pic and want to send it to me, I'll put it on a private page on my site and you can link to it there.

Or you can use a host like imageshack: http://imageshack.us/

But I don't think there's a way to upload it straight to the forum. Unless I missed something, which is possible.

Just in case imageshack doesn't let you hot link (and it may, I dunno) and you get a box with a toad in it ... You can try storing it on flickr.com too ...

Okay, it's official, I'm at the --> wotf027 too.

I did the imageshack thing. They even give you several versions of the url you can hotlink to. Even knowing the very dimensions of the avatar I want to use, knowing it fits in the dimensions and size limitations, nothing is working, and I don't want to spend all day opening up a gazillion accounts to try hotlinking from everywhere to get my image on here as an avatar <grrrrrr>. Ironically, a regular ol' avatar site gave me the generic ferret just fine (so long as I manually typed in the pixel dimensions). Frustrating! I suppose I am stuck with the generic "Peeje."

But just so you know, I was totally going for my star protagonist in The Land of OCKT:

If people are having problems with the free image hosts, I'll gladly host images on my webspace. Just send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail, so you can send the image over. Smile
I also have image editing software, so can shrink it down to the requisite 100x100 pixels if needed.

That's the frustrating part. I've got image editing software. Got the avatar shrunk well past the 100X100 so it can also fit into the required 6.00K limit. (I think it's at something like 76X77, 5.9somethingK). The url function simply wont link, not even from my FB <more grrrrrrr>. Although, the slightly larger, higher res version links jeeeeest fine as an image straight onto this forum reply page. As you can see above wotf007 .

Of course, I am still very much a cave woman when it comes to technology.

Oh my gosh that's awesome!!! I could never get away with that. The best I could do was Samuel, after His Grace, His Excellency, The Duke of Ankh; Commander Sir Samuel Vimes (my husband thinks he's named after the biblical Samuel... shhhh!).

My wife and I gave our sons pretty unusual names, (Arrawyn and Taliesin, both from Welsh mythology, with slight spelling/pronunciation changes so people in the U.S. don't explode trying to pronounce them) but they should be glad they weren't born female. My first choice for a girl name was Viradecthis, an obscure Tungrian goddess... wotf019

I'm awfully glad I wasn't born a boy. My father wanted a name that had no vowels. Hence, my name would have been "Cwm," pronounced Coom, I think. It might be Welsh, and it is the name of a kind of geological feature found on a mountain. I can't even imagine trying to explain to every single person that it wasn't a typo.

Cwm is neat! And I love Taliesin. Sadly, my husband shot down Suffer-Not-Injustice as a middle name. His exact words were, "he is not a dog!"

Speaking of mythology, I had a giant hand to forehead moment when I realized my dog's sire (he's a wolfhound) is named Arawn. The kennel name is Annwyn. And he's a red flanked white hound. Dur.

Ah, names are funny. My parents couldn't have been more different in their tastes. My mom likes white-bread names and wanted to name me Jessie or Britney. My dad likes flowery names, and he’s never been able to live down the fact that he suggested Ocean-Spray.

I had a conversation about names a while back in which I was introduced to this name: La-a. Guess how it's pronounced? La-Dash-Uh.

Mine weren't bohemian, but Grayson has been quite the oddball name all my life, especially as I'm female. Assigned to the boys' dormitory at science camp two years in a row, always addressed as Mr. in correspondence, and usually misspelled, misheard, misunderstood...I love it now, but as a kid, it was a pain in the watusi.

So our older two kids we named Ben and Sophie. Easy to pronounce and spell in both languages (English and Dutch). Also, alas, top-ten names, as it turned out (Sophie has even been number one for years in NL), so our kids have to be Ben J and Sophie J at school, hockey, dance and so on. Thus we gave the third kid an uncommon name.

Much madness is divinest sense, to a discerning eye; much sense, the starkest madness. (Emily Dickinson)

My mom gave me an unusual name. Then, 10 years later, it became a very popular name. The good news is, people who just see my byline assume I'm a lot younger than I actually am.
