I did click on Mark All Read under recent posts (tab on top row). That seemed to do it. Now I only get the orange bell for topics I've started or subscribed to.
Otherwise I go to unread posts and it shows me the new ones.

Just a shout-out to all who's interested, especially Wulf: You'll notice the links to other topics no longer work, this being a different forum. As such, the delightful TOC in front of the Super Secrets is no longer effective. Obviously, it would be a big job to update something like this, but just a reminder here; for now, new users will find it difficult to navigate the Super Secrets.

Thank you for the alert on this. I (Jason) was already alerted on this and have it on the list of items to be fixed.... Will get it done as soon as possible...

Thanks for your concern, Reuben! Yeah, I saw that problem about five minutes after the new place opened. I'm sure it's item 137 on Jason's fix-it list. At least my little Hobbits came across, undamaged and unspoiled.

Very happy you like the new upgraded Writers of the Future Forum. Happy to help with any questions or usage issues. Enjoy! ?
Jason,
I'm having a bit of trouble trying to Private message. I've gone to My Profile, then messages, but there's a little note down the bottom that says 'You are not allowed to send messages yet'. It won't let me send any.
I can receive messages (thanks Reuben!) but I cannot reply. Obviously, I can post on the forum but I'd love to be able to PM, too.
Any help?
Scott

I have the same problem. Does 'yet' mean you have to be a member longer?
But then my forum posts seem to have got zeroed with the upgrade as well.
?
Thanks for the heads up. I found a default setting that required a user to make five posts on the forum before they were approved to send PM. I have removed this restriction, so you should be all set to send PM now.
The PM should be fixed for you now. As to your forum posts being zeroed, this should not be the case. Please send me a PM with any other user name or email you might have and I can review this. If one has two accounts I am able to merge them together and all of the posts will move into one account.
Dear Jason,
I sure am! I've messaged a few people now and they've gone through.
If my post also brought to light a setting that might (even in some minor way) have previously hindered other forum users, then all the better.
Thank you,
Scott

Until about 2 weeks ago, when I clicked on a thread title, the thread would go to my most recent unread post in that thread, but it's stopped doing that and goes to page 1 every time. I haven't disabled cookies (if that's what it depends on).

Yes, same with me. There used to be an orange NEW button as well, which has since gone extinct.

I've noticed the same from my connection. Now I click on the top row of the thread.

Hello. Thanks for the feedback on this. There was a manual function that forced one to go to the most recent topic that was turned off as when one tried to look at the 1st post in a thread it would not let you do this, just forced you to the most recent post. For such threads as the SUPER SECRETS where there is a table of contents this created a big problem.
However, that being said there is a "last post" in the top of the blue bar that will drop one to the end, which would help.
Hope this clarifies my programing adjustment.
Best, Jason

Might there be a way to turn the "last post" button into a "first unread post" button instead? I understand that may be more complicated, but the previous forum had a function like that and I made a good deal of use out of it. No worries if not--it's just a suggestion.

Could another possibility be to make the icon to the left of thread titles link to the latest unread post? https://www.screencast.com/t/ItQvMKtPv

Hello all! So I think I was able to add the "New" buttons back, but still allow you to go to the first page of a topic without it bouncing you out right away. Let me know. There might be a bunch of "New" that you already saw that will need to be clicked on, but after this should be back to normal. Hope this works the way I think it should.
There is also a "Mark all read" button at the very bottom of the forum in the stats section you can use to reset these organ "New" buttons.
Thanks, Jason

Great job, Jason. This works much better. Now you can choose to go to the beginning of a thread, or click to the end. Thank you for bringing the new Forum up to speed!

Not sure the new buttons are working. Yesterday they seemed to work sometimes by going to the first post and then redirecting to the last. Sometimes it just stayed on the first post.
Today it just goes to the first page.

I think I see what the issue is. Sometimes when you click on the organ button it pops to the first page, and then you have to wait a few seconds, which seems like a lifetime, for it to then jump down to the bottom where the new post is. Do me a favor and try clicking on one of the "New" buttons and give it a few seconds to see if it then jumps down.
Just tried four. None of them went beyond the first page. Yesterday I noticed the delay and waited. Today its not working at all.
I'm using android chrome if that helps.

@storysinger it is for me too now. Save for the new user thread but that's huge so it could just be timing out.
Is there a reason it needs to go to the first page anyway? Can it not just go straight to the last page or do you need to calculate the paging?

Most forums default to the first page (probably in case the reader is new to the thread and wants to start from the beginning). I will note that things have been working fine for me, but I will also note that I've mostly been viewing the forum on my phone.

I meant when you click the new button. It goes to the first page and then goes to the new post. Just wondered why.
It doesn't seem to work all the time. I've noticed a problem with really long threads and I have waited and given it time. Also short threads with only one page it doesn't go to the end just stays at the top of the page.

One thing I've noticed recently (and I'm noticing today) is that the main body pages of the forum posts sometimes seem to make a mistake with the paging count. Right now, I'm seeing threads that were previously 9 pages long suddenly presented all on 1 page, and previously, I remember having a really strange experience where the forum view for one thread (which was actively being posted in at the time) jumped from something like 19 pages, to 13, then all the way down to 3 long pages, and then back up to a page count in the 20s again (after which it seemed to settle down and remain stable).
Unsure if there's some kind of math error in the logic that's determining the page count or page size. It doesn't really cause any problem in terms of usability, but it is rather odd.

We were testing suitable posts to page back then, Dr. Jest. It settled because we chose. It’s now only set to a long page on days when we have AMAs. It’s easier for the guest to find and answer questions if the questions are all on one page.
