I have a question for the collective mind: when submitting a story to Baen's Universe Slush, how do you format a story to get it to read correctly in the forums? It's been a while since I've submitted (not sure why) and I forget how to get my story to look readable. Do you go through line by line or is there a copy/paste trick that makes it simple?

Thanks!

I think some people have used the Word to HTML converter here: http://www.vocshop.com/rick/barpost.html

But I have always run into problems when I tried to do full stories rather than just snippets, and I have had varying success with other converters.

Some people are pretty good at getting their stories to post will full formatting, but I usually run into problems and end up just doing a text file that is kind of setup for online reading.

I usually convert to single space, change the paragraph formatting to no indents, replace ^p with ^^p (to double space between paragraphs), and then run a macro to convert underlines to before and after underscores (hello becomes _hello__)

It takes less than a minute or two to convert back and forth between standard manuscript format and this online text format, and for me it just seems to be less hassle.

But like I said, some people have posted perfectly formatted stories, apparently without too much trouble. If I try to, I usually end up with half the story being underlined or something like that.

Usually what takes the most time for me is going through and filtering the profanity (they are sensitive about nanny software giving the site a more adult rating). I've started just using asterisks (e.g., sh*t) to make them easier to Find when I switch them back.

Thanks Monty. I remember why I hadn't posted a story there in a while. I think I had to format my previous stories by hand.
