The Ocean call goes until February 28 (just submitted mine)
H.G. Wells is also open now and closes March 30.
All of the upcoming calls can be found here.
Rejected! My ocean story got close but was edged out because it needed "more refining and restructuring." Sadly, I agree. Oh, well! Next theme is HG Wells. I'm sure I can put something together with that.
Best of luck to any others still in the running.

Do they explain more by what they exactly mean by H. G. Wells.
That could be a very interesting exercise. Oh, rats...want to cut back on my short stories for a month or two to concentrate on my novels. I need to get three of them revised and online.

Form rejection for me as well, in the last round, with very vague comments from Celina, the editor.

L.D., if you read their submissions guidelines, they give quite helpful descriptions for each of their themes.

My Japanese mythology story is second rounding! Yeah! That makes five out of six stories that have second (or later) rounded with these guys, so it looks like I'm getting close. Hopefully this 6th entry will be the one that makes it past the final round. I worked really hard on it. Fingers crossed!
Is anybody else in? There's still time.

Woohoo!
Is this the e-mail that goes:
Thank you for submitting your story to Penumbra. I've passed ... on to the next round of consideration.
or a different one?
(I'm hoping mine goes all the way this time. I know a stupid amount of information about Japanese mythology and culture, and will be sad if I can't write a publishable story set in that milieu. )

I wouldn't know Japanese mythology if it whacked me over the head with a samurai sword.
I'm not having much luck with Penumbra lately, none of my stories fit the themes and I'm not really feeling inspired enough by any of them to sit down and write a story specifically for Penumbra. Which is a shame, as I too have been through to the later rounds in the past.

I really wanted to sub to the Japanese mythology call, but I just didn't end up with the time to fully research to the point I would have felt comfortable jumping in. Just finished wrangling a story together for the Fae theme, though. It will be my first submission there since the Native American folklore issue.
Good luck Preston and Stewart! Hope to see both your names on the cover.

They just said "moving to second round" and please be patient as they finalize issue. But yeah, I don't know a whole lot about Japanese culture, though after studying it in grade school, I've always been fascinated by it. I did a lot of research for this one, so I'm hoping it pays off.
Good luck, Stewart. It looks like it might be just you and me in the running. Nice thing about Penumbra, they have a quick response time. The longest I've ever had to wait after the deadline was 9 days, and that was for a story that made it to a "later" round. Haven't heard anything yet. So no news is good news?

The two times I've made it to the final round (with the same story in two different themes, funnily enough!) I received my rejections 14 days after the deadline (May 2012) and 4 days (March 2013) after the deadline. My other submission to them (January 2013), which made it to an unspecified "later round," was rejected 9 days after.
So I think we have a few days still before any rejections start coming out, in any case.
Er... I apologize for the rejectomancy in this post.

Yay, Dawn! Good luck! Using history as my guide,(from 5 prior submissions) I'm expecting to hear results tomorrow or the next day. Of course, those were all ultimately rejections. Acceptances presumably would take longer...so no news would be good news, right? Right?

Actually, I think the acceptances go out about the same time if it's the final round (or even if it's not, in a few cases). I seem to remember Dantzel hearing about her zombie sale with them at roughly the same time I heard about my own rejection--maybe even slightly earlier, oddly.
There's no recent action on Duotrope though, so presumably they're somewhere in the second-round judging process right now. I'm guessing anywhere from another 2-3 days to another week or so.

You may have a long wait, Dawn. The deadline for that issue isn't until the end of May.

The issue's not out until July, so they still have plenty of time to finalize submissions and sort things out.
I would guess that they're still working on the HG Wells issue.
