I did actually send in a story for the revolution issue but it came back right away with a note pointing out it didn't fit the theme.
Ditto for me with the 'Lost' issue.
What did you guys send--a cookbook and/or memoir and/or children's poem?

Heh, well, said story featured two witches in a private petty dispute over a garden fence. The only "revolutionary" aspect to it was entirely off-stage, an event briefly referred to in the past. So I'm not surprised it didn't fit. Also the style of it is such that I've had it rejected for being the "wrong tone" several times I think. It's just a tough story to sell I suspect, which is a shame, as I quite like it.

Is it humorous? Maybe ASIM?

Yup, it's decidedly "not serious." It's full of Gatorly mischief in fact. I don't think it's been to ASIM yet either so I fully intend to send it there at some point. Especially as the Australians seem to like me.

The one-line version of the reject is one I've received before, and the final round is different than the second.
Preston: sounds like you have a good chance with it elsewhere, too, if that's its only flaw.
As a Japanese mythology nerd, I'd be glad to look at both your stories.
As for me, well... *clears throat*

See you on the other side! I'm fairly sure the best possible response I'll be getting this time is a "We liked this but it doesn't fit the theme."

Good luck, everybody in for Revolutions! Have to admit, on this one I didn't even try. I guess I'm just not rebellious enough.

We're not having much luck with revolutions, are we? I'm out too, with the below message:
"Thank you for submitting to Penumbra eMag. Unfortunately your story didn't quite hook me, so I am passing on it for now.
I wish you luck in finding a home for it and look forward to reading future submissions from you."
Nothing revolutionary. So...fairies, huh? Okay, if you say so. Fairies, it is.
Good luck all!

Well what happened was that I started a story for 'Lost' got stuck in the middle and sent them a Lost story that I already had. No dice. Then I started a story for 'Revolution' and got stuck in the middle again so that is still awaiting completion along with the 'Lost'.
Now as it happens I do have a fairy story of appropriate size, but since its my usual fuzzy genre I'm inclined to fear another straight rejection on grounds of bad fit.
Should there a forumite out there willing to take a look at it before I decide whether to submit it, I should be grateful. It's currently only about 2,300 and an earlier draft was specially commended for humour in a small competition.

My "Revolution" story turned out to be about twice as long as Penumbra accepts, so I was out before we'd even begun.
I have the seeds of an idea for the Fae issue, though, and hope to write it this weekend if I can get it plotted before then.
Ishmael: I'm interested in trading, so I'll let you know when I have a draft ready.

For some reason I thought the far deadline had passed. I just happen to have one fae story maybe two or three. Have to check the lengths though. And I have to remember to send it.

Fae deadline is the end of June, and Penumbra is 3500 words or less, last I checked.

It doesn't look like Penumbra will be a SFWA qualifying market any time soon: http://www.annleckie.com/2013/06/10/people-die-of-exposure/
It looks like their not paying pro-rates for the "Rising Talent" story each issue disqualifies them, so they apparently have lost their 'year of compliant operation' requirement towards SFWA qualification and will have to start over.

This means I have two deadline this month. If I send in my WotF story by Friday I can concentrate on Penumbra.
I forget for sure but I think I have two fae stories within their word limit. And I could write a new one. Too bad my longer stories are too long though. I think a couple of those are better writing and stories. Oh well.
Of course they still have my writing,

Rats, came back to say the one I thought about sending is out. It might be back by the 30th but I don't know.
I have two other fae tales under 3,500 words but one is very light, the other is kinda in-between.
I think I will try to write one-my muse is already working on it as a challenge-and if that doesn't work go ahead and send in the in-between one, unless that one story comes back in time.

Anyone sent in their fae tale yet?
I found one I think I will send in even though it's one of my simple, easy to read stories. The story I wanted to write won't gel enough. But I think I will wait intill almost the last minute to see if the other story comes back in time.

Well, after re-reading my Fairy story, I hate it. So I wrote another one and I'm much happier with it. Just sent it in. I think I have a fairy good chance this time.
