Say-what is the procedure for acceptance (with a zine--not the contest)? Do they email you? Call you? Do they put it on hold for a while? I'm planning to find out first hand but . . . wotf004

For what it's worth, I've done some small to midsize mags and anthologies, only one pro rate, and so far all the responses have been emails not calls.

Some editors did email to ask if they could hold a story "for consideration" and then sent a second email accepting or rejecting the story at a later date. A few were even kind enough to set a limit on how long they'd hold the piece -- those were definitely the minority.

And one or two anthologies have published a shortlist first and then emailed the R or A after final decisions were made. Those are the hardest for me if I get rejected. Making the shortlist gets me way too giddy and hopeful - then I crash and burn.

But I speak as a relative newbie - others may have different experiences.

If this world holds no wonder, it is no place for me.

I'm happy to report my fourth Flame Tree acceptance. This one is for 'Detective Stories', due out in November. It's a second outing for my two Victorian policemen, MacAndrew and Smithers, whose first case featured in the inaugural edition of The Sockdolager back in 2015.

I also have two other acceptances waiting on a publication date. (That's not counting Albedo 2 where I've been waiting so long I'm pretty sure publication is not going to happen.)

It may be worth pointing out to newer members that acceptances aren't the last stage, publication is. You can have magazines go out of business or editorial changes that leave your story out in the cold again, even when you thought you'd sold it.

I've neglected to post it here, but last summer Mad Scientist Journal published a classified ad where I imagined a mad science organization looking to hire a mad engineer to actually put their mad science into practice. It's out of exclusivity, so I put it on my site. https://jonficke.com/2019/03/28/fimbulv ... -engineer/

Then, I wrote a short story of the poor sap who got the job that MSJ accepted and have live on their site now:

I completely forgot to post here, but my serial-HM story to WoTF, Lavender Footsteps, is in The Colored Lens's Summer 2019 issue. It's also my first paid sale and I'm pretty stoked.

If you have Kindle Unlimited, it's free to read, so give it a go!

It really does, especially since I love that story.

And I'm really happy with the title. Our very own RSchibler came up with the first iteration during a story swap last year and I fell in love with it.

Submitted multiple times/earned an HM multiple times (probably with edits each time).

Because finalists and semi-finalists can't be submitted again, maybe? (Anything below that absolutely can be resubmitted, although editing beforehand is recommended.)

Congrats. I had one I wanted to send it for that but couldn't see a way to get it under the word limit.

Examine every sentence and try to take out one word from each. There's usually at least one word you can eliminate from each sentence.
