My WOTF workshop 24 hour story, "The Eyes of Hemshat", is available now at Abyss & Apex. Fun fact: it was actually about 1k words longer when I wrote it (in 24 hours) and was definitely the longest story written my year.

I just received a “didn’t win me over,” from F&SF. It’s my first one of those. I always get “didn’t quite grab me,” with one or two comments.

Anyway, on to another day.

I've been taking Dean Wesley Smith's free course on Fiction Kickstarters https://wmg-publishing-workshops-and-lectures.teachable.com/p/kickstarter and am giving an open submission anthology a go (it's live now!). If you're interested in which SFF authors your writing is most like (or in using computer algorithms to sift through slush piles), give it a gander:

I am excited to share that DisgruntledPeony and I co-wrote a story that has been selected for publication in the Hold Your Fire anthology from WordFire Press!

Proceeds from the anthology go to fund the scholarship we received. It’s a shiny ToC as well- at least one other forumite is with us but I’ll let them announce themselves.

I’m so ecstatic that our story was selected. Co-writing was a really fun experience!

My story The Greatest Secret appears in the just published "Heartbreaks & Half-truths" anthology from Superior Shores Press.

And I have an essay up at Art Taylor's "The First Two Pages" talking about how I crafted the beginning of the story.

wotf049 wotf049 I submitted for the first time to a pro-paying market--Science Fiction and Fantasy, I was worried it would give me a bad name and maybe I should push it off, and I got a "didn't win me over"!

I'm a little stunned.

Can anyone confirm that this still means something good?

That's a rejection, but I'm pretty sure that one means Charlie read the story all the way through. wotf007 Kind of like getting an HM from WotF.

I assumed 'win me over' was his higher tier response, but I've received so many variations from that magazine..."didn't grab me" "didn't quite grab me' "didn't win me over" "didn't quite win me over"...on twitter Charlie has said these are not specifically tiered so hell if I know what the difference is. The closest I've gotten to a personal was "interesting idea but didn't quite win me over."

All my rejections from SFaF have also been signed Charlie, so I'm not convinced he's read every story through to the end, though I could be wrong. I think it's on all the form rejections.

Charlie talks about his rejection templates here, though it's from a few years ago when electronic submissions first opened, so may not be exactly the same: http://www.ccfinlay.com/blog/nectar-for ... ncers.html

“didn’t grab me” = only read the opening
“didn’t work for me” = good, read all the way through
“didn’t win me over” = you'll probably sell it elsewhere

And look at these stats: "473 out of 751 [submissions] listed one or more previous pro sales. 63% of you are already writing at this level."

Yikes!
