Thanks, I appreciate that! I hope the story didn't hit too close to home for you. wotf014

No, not at all--but I'm moved by the fact you remembered that about me, and thought of it in this context. Thanks for that.

My story Random Fire is now up at Abyss & Apex. This one has an odd structural gimmick to it, so I am anxious to see if people notice that and what they think of it if they do.

Awesome story... heartwrenching.

Vanaaron - I really liked your "structural gimmick". That dischordant moment of "hey, what???" made it all the more powerful when I worked it out. Great story!

Congrats Steve!

Thanks for the positive feedback on "Random Fire," everyone!

That's a great table of contents, Steve. Congratulations!

Vanaaron-read your story. Nice Job! And wow what an emotional story. I was holding my breath at the end. All the science stuff at the beginning was hard for me to follow. Where do you get all your science info from? Do you have a background or just really good at research. Or was it all made up and I fell for it? Can you tell I have no clue when it comes to physics?

I have no particular expertise in physics either, but once I had decided the main character should be a physicist I realized I had to put in some technical talk. I had at least read a book a few years back about the double-slit experiment and Schrödinger's Cat and such, so I tried playing around with that. (The only research I did was looking up lingo -- "Bloch spheres," "electron topology," etc. -- I have not the first clue what any of those things are.) I was afraid it would all come across as very phony hand-waving, but when I sent it to Abyss & Apex, it turned out the physics was what they liked best about the story. They asked for a rewrite of the story before accepting it, but they instructed me not to change any of the physics. Go figure.

I got an email today from Buzzy Multimedia telling me they've accepted my short story after I'd rewritten and resubmitted Smile So now they'll assign me an editor and we'll bring it to whatever shape they want. The first issue won't come out until next year and I'm curious to see how the quality of the work compares to others already out there. They're paying 5 cents/word, so not too shabby on that end! wotf010

Wow! lots of success reports. This is my favorite thread on the board. Congrats Madison and Alex! And also thank you Vanaaron for answering my questions about the science of it. It gives me some hope as a soft science graduate that I might one day be able to be as convincing with hard science in my stories as you were in Random Fire!!

No Kindle version, Alex?

Hopefully soon! With Vol. 2, there were a couple months between paperback and ebook release, for whatever reason. So yes, there will be a Kindle version, but it might be another month or so.

OK, I'm eagerly waiting. At this point, other than comic books, I've gone nearly 100% Kindle. Unless it's a book I must have and it's too obscure for a Kindle version, I'll wait. The last print book I bought was an old book on building a model of the Cutty Sark. It's public domain, and so there are many publishers who print it; but not a one of them has released it on Kindle.

And in 15 days -- 15 FREAKIN' DAYS, I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!!! -- I'll get my new Kindle Fire, and I'll be reading my comics on Kindle, too! I've pre-ordered the Kindle version of Watchmen.

I have a new flash piece called "The Burbles" up at The Dream People. This was my first attempt at writing Bizarro fiction, so I'm very pleased to have it appear at The Dream People, which is a respected Bizarro publication. Among other good stuff, the issue I'm in also includes a story by Cat Rambo and an interview with Joe R. Lansdale.

wotf048 And I thought that I sometimes wrote weird flash, Aaron, geesh. How did you ever get away with that first sentence, er, paragraph????? wotf006

I have a writing buddy from the writers meetup I used to organize who writes jeeeeest like that. He's got something like 50+ sales to zines. There is definitely a market!

Haha, btw: I had a flash piece in AlienSkin a few years ago that also featured a Pac-Man <img src="{wotf}:wotf024:

Thanks!

As to the weirdness quotient, when I was writing this I feared it wouldn't sell anywhere because it was not weird enough for Bizarro but too weird for anyone else.

Meghan, every last person in my writing group tried to talk me out of that first sentence, but I had a hunch a Bizarro editor might like it. And I want to see your Pac-Man story. wotf007
