Woo hoo Patty!! Fantastic. Can't wait to read it! (I am a HUGE fan of Patty's fiction.)

(though Daily SF can't be *that* picky, they've bought like 5 stories from me and I'm a hack...)

I appear to have sold my WOTF workshop 24-hour story to Analog.
Martin already picked up on this, but, hey, that *is* my name in Duotrope.
*blush*
Wow, a superfast story too. Congrats!

Congratulations, Patty! It doesn't get any better than ANALOG.

Congratulations, Patty! I need the success in a 24-DAY story that you get from your 24-HOUR story! ![]()

Heh. There are those who might answer: "Try a 24-hour story, Scott!" The point of the exercise (if I understand it correctly, since I haven't been there) is to demonstrate the power and liberation that comes when you emphasize creating over analyzing.
As I understand the exercise, it works like this... They give you a random object. They take you out on the street and have you interview a random passer-by. I'm not sure if you're after their life story or if you have particular questions to ask or what, but I know there's an interview involved. And then they give you a day "off". Do whatever you want to do, hang out in the bar, whatever you want... as long as in the morning you have a story that incorporates that random item and that random interview. By making it entirely random AND time-boxed, they eliminate a lot of notions about writing a story: that you have to have a great idea, that you have to think about it for a long time, that you have to research and plan and outline ad nauseum, etc. All you're left with is a couple of random elements, a couple of days of instruction and inspiration, and the knowledge that you're good enough to beat out thousands of other people to get to this workshop (which is something of a confidence booster). Now go to work! Don't try to make it perfect, just make it DONE!
Yes, the idea is pretty intimidating, but it teaches a lesson about applying butt to seat and brain to page. Or at least it seems to, since a lot of these stories seem to get published eventually.

Dean & Kris do the same thing at the Anthology Workshop. We get an anthology theme during the workshop and have 24-hours to get it done. It was a lot of fun to do and there were some amazing stories written in the process.

And here I thought reviewers came up with their comments by reading the story, not the entrails of the author. Silly me!

Note to self: lay off red meat and Twinkies prior to first evisceration.
Edit: Hmmm, if divination by reading entrails is called extispicy, then sacrificing the wrong chicken is exticrispy?

LOL, Kyle, my first analysis by Lois went better than expected. She had some nice things to say about Party, with Echoes (Redstone SF, also free on Smashwords). I don't know that she'll view this one with the same positive lenses. It's--as she would say--a very Analog-ish story, and she doesn't seem to be overly enamoured with Analog.
Ah, well. *shrugs*
*I* am very happy about this. Not really sure I should worry too much about Lois.

Congratulations, and like Martin said: Persistence!
That tells you more about your coming successful career than whether any single story sells or not. Any single story (or two) may never sell ... but the persistent author will sell! (and sell again and again!)
