Look for "The Dubious Apotheosis of Baskin Gough" in the ARCANE II Anthology.
Well, it's been 168 times around, but I finally hit the mark.
I've sold my first story!
Congratulations, Michael! No better feeling in the world! But yes: Details?
I'll post it up in my signature, but the story sold to AE Canadian Science Fiction.
I quite honestly didn't believe it when I looked at the e-mail in the preview, but it's going through the editing process, so I'm waiting on the edited version.
And, as always, thank you everyone.

Yes. I can hardly imagine a better example of Brad's guest blog today. Mike inspires me and humbles me with his persistence. (Brad, meanwhile, kicks us in the hindquarters.)

Congrats! 168 is definitely persistence.
(says the person with probably close to 500 rejections now. Sigh)
Nice work!!! 168 is the magic number. (g)
In seriousness, that's very cool. Most people quit before they even hit 50 rejections.
PERSISTENCE = WINS.
Coming up: "Life Flight," in
Coming up: "The Chaplain's War," from
Nebula, Hugo, and Campbell nominee.
Agreed. It's been rough, but it was actually a story I didn't think would sell. And it was a story I kind of jotted down notes on, but really wrote the first draft off the notes and sent it out there. Goes to show about being my own worst critic.
Now, I've saved a copy of the contract (which reverts rights after 6 months if I read it correctly) in a file with the story so I know to keep my print stories separate from the others. After all, I may want to get this out to reprints (I still can't believe I'm saying this phrase this year).
The other thing was I told a friend of mine at UT who is from Canada. He said he's going to tell all of his friends about the story and get them to buy the magazine. All I need to find out is which issue it's coming out in.
And, I've always wanted to use this one...

It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? And when you finally have a copy....
Savour, enjoy and remember. It's always great - but that first one is special.

Notice how I'm holding back from saying something that rhymes with Timeline's Cool Tree...

Or self-pub. You have more options today. Options are good!

My plan is this: get the rights back after 6 mo., then try for reprints for 3-6 mo., if nothing happens, then I'm going to take a picture, make a cover, and self-publish online.
Now I need to go off and read that off of DWS's blog...

Well done, Annie! GigaNotoSaurus has two stories on the current Nebula ballot, so that's a great market to place a story.
Thanks guys.
And with Daily SF sending out my story tonight, I am finally officially pro'd out of contest.
Good night, all. And better luck than I had. ![]()
Couple of questions, Annie:
Do you pro out when your final pro story is accepted or when it is published?
and
If you pro out during a quarter, can you still submit for this quarter?
Too early for me to worry about pro-ing out yet, but I'm sure most of us would like to know anyway.

I pro'd out when the 4th qualifying story was published (ie tonight). I could have slid a Q2 story in under the wire but I made a choice to not submit anything this quarter. You are eligible right up to the point you aren't, so if you want to get a final story in once you know the date of your pro-ing out, it's totally okay to do so. I chose not to (for many reasons, but not least among them is that I don't think my stories are the kind of thing that will get past KD, so I didn't bother).
Well, Annie, what can I say? Pity you won't have you with us any longer - even for a final try, congrats on your pro-ing out and best of luck with Q1 - I hope your final story is getting past KD at last!
