This will be my final EDF story for a time because I've recently become a slush reader for them. Really enjoying being behind the stage for once.

Meanwhile, here's the link.

That's fabulous, Dustin! Both the publication and the slush reader position.

It must be fascinating to get a glimpse behind the curtain. I've heard people say that being a slush reader was hugely educational to them in their own writing.

Nice story, Dustin! I'm going to miss your EDF tales, but getting to be a slush reader is definitely worth it. It can give you a sense of what does and does not work in writing in a more profound way than just by reading published stories. Congratulations!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

The thing I like the most about slushing for EDF is that there's feedback on every story. As a general rule, we say something that we liked about the story, then suggest something that would improve it. (Assuming it's a reject.) I like this philosophy. I figure, there's something positive in every story, and the author should know that.

I enjoy having to think about why the story didn't work for me, instead of just reading the first paragraph and knowing it's not going to work. Analyzing and describing the specifics has so far been helpful. I've already altered one of my own stories based on what I've told others.

So far I've only said "yes" to one story. Interestingly, it's the only story I remember. All the others fell out of my head, but this one stuck. DW has said he likes the ones that are memorable. I have to agree.
Now, if only I knew how to write memorable each time. Who knows, maybe this will help me figure it out. wotf006
