Pleased to announce that I just sold a story to Cosmos Magazine's online edition.
(The online version doesn't pay enough to qualify for SFWA, but hey--paid for stories is paid for stories!)

After the tech blog gig turned out to be more trouble than it's worth, I applied for an unpaid (in the beginning) position as a weekly blogger for Amazing Stories. I received a reply back the next morning saying they'd love to have me aboard, and my first piece will be published this Saturday. It's called, "All Your Rebel Base Are Belong to Us: In Defense of J. J. Abrams." We'll see how it goes over with the intertoobs.

Congratulations Stewart and Elinor and Marina!!!

So.. a question for you successful people. If you've submitted something to Analog how long does it take for you to KNOW you've gotten a second read?

I'd suggest trying one of the following resources:
Duotrope (paid subscription, free trial)
Both will let you track where you've sent stories, how long they've been out, what the most recent return time was, and the average amount of time.
Generally speaking, it is highly unlikely you'll sell to one of the big magazines on your first try. Note this does not mean that you shouldn't try. It means that you should try many times.
