From the Greek Basileus, meaning 'king'. Therefore it is the equivalent of Rex which is derived from Latin.

The OED speculates that ocimum basilicum, the king of all herbs, derives its name from some royal unguent since it was well known to Theophrastus.

Alternatively it was said to anaesthetize the sting of scorpions (basilisks) though it is believed that they ran through an awful lot of volunteers trying to make it work.

Nice going, B.J.! wotf010
(And aha! A NAME!)

Unless B.J. is on his birth certificate, we still don't have a name. wotf23

The only people who call me Basil are doctors and the government. Even the bank calls me B.J., so it's more my name than anything else. Smile

But seriously, way to go! I know you've been working toward this for a while, I'm glad to see the sale.
Wolf is a good one. Come back and post the link, OK?

Thanks! And as requested: http://aurorawolf.com/2014/06/3791/

Our neighbour has a dog called Basil. An excellent name--for a dog.
We often hear her out in the yard, yelling "BASIL!" as loud as she can.
Possibly you have to be British to fully appreciate this. (Or just raised on Fawlty Towers.)

Did your neighbor use the same voice as Fawlty's wife? You know, the snappy two-note one that sounded like she was cursing when she called him? Yes, raised on Fawlty Towers, Danger Mouse, and Monty Python.

I believe the name of the hotel was Farty Towels, not Faulty Towers...just saying.

My story, Life Out of Harmony, is now out at Perihelion Science Fiction. This story was a flat rejection from the contest in Q3 of last year, which seriously bummed me out, because I loved the story. Was glad to find that someone else liked it as much as I did.
