Just heard Stephen King has joined the TOC of Qualia Nous, a science fiction/horror anthology that I also happen to have a story in.
Definitely deserves a dancing banana! Congrats, Pat!

As for sharing a TOC with Stephen King...
Maybe I should start writing horror!
No, Gator dear, nobody wants that.
Why not? Why not? I'd be good at it.
Yes dear, but you might be too good at it. You're meant to be a nice, cute little Gator, who everyone likes, remember? You're not meant to go around chomping people and... and....
Aw. Sooo boring.

Thanks, Scott! And, that sounds like a great goal for your critique group-mate. How cool would that be! Good luck to him.

Thanks, George, Preston, Tamlyn, and Ishmael!
Glad you liked the changes, Ishmael. The ending gave me some fits until a conversation with the boy wonder (my 14 year old son) opened my eyes to what was wrong. Worked much better after that.
It was an interesting story to write. Deadline for a challenge, I'd started and utterly failed something completely different, had only a few hours left, and was staring out the window of my house, trapped by the rare Seattle snow. All those things came together to create a story that was hugely different, voice-wise, from anything else I'd ever done. And all that snow might just possibly have had something to do with the story.

I think it's much harder to get an article in Nature than a story--good luck to him! (Not that it's easy to get a story in Nature either. But still...)

True. And yet he seems to have a good basis for a worthy paper here (http://news.byu.edu/archive14-jul-tsetsefly.aspx), so hope is not yet lost. The guy has an amazing mind. And I just talked him into submitting to the contest, so...there you are.
Sf people are just plain fun.

I'm sure it must be harder to get in Nature with an article. As a side note, I find it highly interesting that all communication I've had from Nature (aside from the Futures editor) has addressed me as Dr. Birch. That's the default assumption, I suppose, but I have never been, nor ever will be a Dr.

I hereby confer upon you, Rebecca Birch, under no particular authority whatsoever, the title of Doctorum Adamus Cum Flabello Dulce. And lo thou'rt a Dr. Amen.
Or whatever it is I'm supposed to say there.

Alternatively you can become a famous author, let everyone know that you really love some small place like Exeter or Boise that happens to have a college and they will doubtless confer on you a doctorate of literature (honoris causa).
But I am magister in artibus ex universitate oxoniensis and so far as I can see it doesn't help me sell any stories. Maybe I should try putting letters after my name. ( Miaeuow) What do you think?
