Good morning! As some of you saw, editor Mia Kleve, illustrator Jane Noel, and I did a thing at Fyrecon 5!

On Thursday, I dictated a story live from audience prompts.
On Friday, I showed how to transcribe the audio and discussed dictation processes (based on my book with Kevin J. Anderson).
On Saturday morning, Mia edited (part of) the story live before their eyes, and we worked together to understand the story we were telling.
On Saturday evening, Jane created this amazing cover as they watched, discussing options with me.
Saturday night I finished cleanup on the story. Sunday morning, Mia finished the editing.
Sunday night, again as the audience watched (except for an unfortunate internet outage, darned storms), I uploaded to Kindle.
And now it's published!

I would have loved to have watched the entire process, but my daily workshops got in the way. I was excited to attend the last session of the process as my schedule opened late on the last day of Fyrecon. Well done, Martin! Not only was it a cool magic show, it was the magician and his team revealing their tricks and how they’re done, in front of a live audience. Great concept! Congratulations on your successful workshop and result … in spite of internet connection issues!

What a cool idea. Including the audience in the process. It reminds me of a singer-songwriter named Mac Davis.
He would mingle with his crowd and write songs as he went, very entertaining.

With the advent of social media, this may be a preview of the future. Stories created by a crowd of like minded people, all of them happy to be part of the process.

@storysinger I remember Mac Davis, vaguely, but I never saw him in a show like that. I’ll have to look for it!
My immediate inspiration was Harlan Ellison, who used to do bookstore promotions by writing in the bookstore window, based on prompts from fans. They would watch him type, and then he would tape each page to the window so they could read it.
I was having a discussion with some writers once, and I said, “Yeah, but Harlan was famous. People would show up for that. If I typed in a bookstore, people would ignore the strange guy in the corner. Nothing to see here…
But then I realized: I seldom type my first drafts anymore, I dictate them. And dictation can be a performance…
