So I’ve been trying to improve my RWC and send it to other publications, as it is a story that is very close to my heart. But the issue is that the story is around 14 500 words long.
I’ve obviously already submitted it here, but then I also tried Clarkesworld and Beneath Ceaseless Skies (which was my target together with WotF). All obviously said no.
I use duotrope, so I know about some markets (namely Assimov’s, Interzone and GigaNotoSaurus) that do accept stories of this size, but they seem mainly focused on sci-fi and this one is fantasy.
Do you know about any other markets for fantasy novelettes?

novelettes are tough to sell. Do you know about The Submission Grinder? I'm not seeing any other pro paying markets, but Sally Port comes up as a semi-pro possibility.

Those magazines are really hard to get published in. Novelettes take the place of 2 short stories, so I think only well known writers stand a chance. If it means that much to you, why not publish it on Amazon as an ebook?

@reigheena I am familiar with it. I prefer duotrope, but I’ll look into submission grinder too.

@szadok I thought more about sites like Royal road. But Amazon might be a good option too. I’m just not sure if I would have to hire an editor or artist if I want to self-publish it.

@haganenoedward short fiction doesn't do well on Amazon as a stand alone. If it were a spin off of a series, then maybe, but I believe readers would at least want a novella length. Indie authors tend to use novelettes to reward patreon subscribers or newsletter subscribers.

Novelettes are tough. My semi-finalist story in the contest was 13,000 words, and I’ve not been able to find a home for it yet.

I finally decided late last year to compile my own anthology using a couple of my novelettes as anchor stories. That might be an option for you if you’re having trouble selling them elsewhere.

I tried RR too busy and crazy publishing pace. For Amazon, you can make a cover on Canva etc. As for editor--probably a good idea. But ultimately up to you. For the formatting, Amazon does it all for you, but I eventually purchased Vellum to have max flexibility. I should say that after all this, believe it or not but writing and publishing is the easy part. Getting someone to buy it is hard. And getting someone to read it is even harder. But it's really satisfying to know that it's out there. Give you closer so you can move on to other projects.
