So am I correct in thinking that all of these are open to any Worldcon member who wishes to attend, then?

For example, can anybody who wants to listen in on "Writing the SF Novelette" just show up?

You are correct Alex. These panel discussion are the heart of the reason I love WorldCons. Some people love the parties, but I am a panel dude.
These panels run during the day, and they are open to all members. There are a few closed events, like the writing workshops, and some parties, but for the most part it's walk in and take part.
You can learn a lot at the panels, I always try to mic my panel select between science, writing, and then things just for fun.

You're one busy man, Brad! I'd probably keel over from that many. Are you going to find time to eat somewhere in there? Smile
I'm trying to figure out which day would be good for sneaking out of the con to visit Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Now that panel schedules are coming in, it's looking more difficult. wotf004

Thanks, Laurie... Now I have to rejuggle my whole schedule. I completely forgot there's an Apollo Command Module practically right next door to the convention. I have a goal to visit every Command Module, and that one's my "maybe": I can't remember if I've seen it or not! If I did, it was over 30 years ago.

I've visited 7 (Dallas), 9 (Jackson, MI -- but San Diego STOLE IT FROM US, so I've visited it there, too), 11 (DC -- I finally got to see it at the ISDC!), 13 (Hutchinson, KS -- yes, Kansas), 14 (Titusville, FL), 15 (Dayton, OH), 16 (Huntsville, AL), and Skylab 4 (also DC). Once I confirm 8 in Chicago, I'll have 6, 10, 12, 15, 17, Apollo-Soyuz, and Skylabs 2 and 3 to go. 10 will take some doing, since it's in London!

Since Brad posted his schedule, I might as well post mine was well.

Thursday:
1:30-3:00 PM – The SF Scene in Europe (Columbus IJ-KL)
(Luigi Petruzzelli, Gio Clairval, Barbara G. Tam,
Debora Montenari, Alvaro Zinos-Amaro)

3:00-4:00 PM – Opening Ceremonies (Grand Ballroom)

4:30-6:00 PM – Reading (Gold Coast)
(I'll be reading some sold-but-not-yet-published stories)

Friday:
1:30-3:00 PM – WIN SOME, LOSE SOME autograph session
(Comiskey)
(Brad Torgersen, Catherine Asaro, Connie Willis, David Brin,
Eric Flint, Gardner Dozois, Harry Turtledove, Jack McDevitt,
James Patrick Kelly, Kay Kenyon, Kij Johnsopn, Laura Resnick,
Nancy Kress. Nick DiChario, Robert J. Sawyer, Robert
Silverberg, Sheila Williams, Steven H. Silver)

3:00-4:00 – Sign STALKING THE ZOMBIE t-shirts at Off-World Designs table

3:45-4:30 – Autographing at Larry Smith’s table

4:30-6:00 PM – Interview by BJ Galler-Smith (Columbus CD)

9:00-10:30 PM – Guest of Honor speech (Columbus KL)

Saturday:
10:30-11:20 AM – Autographing at American Fantasy Press table

1:30-3:00 PM – Magical Musicals (Crystal B)
(Laura Frankos, Rich Lynch, Connie Willis, Leah Zeldes)

3:00-4:30 PM – The Secret History of Science Fiction (Crystal B)
(Bob Silverberg, Gardner Dozois, Joe Haldeman)

4:30-6:00 PM – Baby Photos slide show (Comiskey Room)
(Over 100 photos from my collection, juxtaposing
pictures of beardless and braless wannabees to
the withered, decrepit writers we've become.)

8:00 PM – Masquerade.
(I'm not a judge or a participant, but I've been asked
to attend. I suspect there'll be a hopefully-brief tribute
to the costumes Carol made for us in the 1970s, when
we entered 5 Worldcon masquerades and won 4.)

Sunday:
1:30-3:00 PM – Fanzines Are Not Just For Fans (Columbus IJ-KL)
(Bob Silverberg, Andy Porter, Dick Smith)

3:00-4:30 PM – Autographing (Riverside Center Exhibition Hall)

4:30-5:30 PM – Autographing at Arc Manor table

8:00 PM – Hugo Ceremony. I'm an accepter, a presenter, and a nominee.

Monday:
10:30 AM-1:30 PM – Resnick movies (Grand Suite 5)
(short films made from my stories)
“Metal Tears”
“Neutral Ground”
“The Faith Machine”
“His Award-Winning SF Film”
“Do Not Take the Name of the Lord in Vain”

1:30-3:00 PM – Collaborating with the GOH (Crystal B)
(Eric Flint, Lezli Robyn, Harry Kloor, Brad
Torgesen, Nick DiChario, Jack McDevitt)

3:00-4:00 PM – Closing Ceremonies (Columbus IJ-KL)

It's true, they're working me kind of hard...but I have every night free, and I
plan to party-hop until dawn. Hope to see some of you there. But not Brad,
Laurie and Brennan; they'll be much too busy schmoozing editors. Or else. wotf008

You want we should think about, as a group that is, a dinner for a meat-up, because I doubt we'll find a slot free of panels that no one wants to attend.

Dinner Meat-up, you're funny.

I've gone over this thing and I'd like to attend stuff nearly constantly 9am - 7pm. I'm sure I'll be too tired at some point and decide to take a nap and give up on a panel... maybe. 😉

Btw, is there a place to get a clearer definition on what the panels are about? If I have to choose between 2 or 3, I'd like to know what a panel is like (or who is there!) not just guess based on the title. Some of them are curious.

Can you tell it's my first time? Smile

Yup my typos are amusing. My gaming buddies will never let me forget the Buffy The Vampire Slayer game I ran that had Hello Hounds in it.
When you get your con materials at registration the con book will have panel descriptions that will help you make those tough calls. A good hint for making those calls is once you start learning which authors and guests are fun on panels is to use that as a tie-breaker.

I make some good ones myself, usually when I'm tired, which seems to be all the time these days.

Love the Hello Hounds! that's awesome. Smile Last night I told the world via facebook that my novel was going to write itself. (Instead of not writing itself) which actually prompted a story idea.
Smile

Thanks for the tips!

ZOMG. The program grid is overwhelming! I'm going to need to study it for a few weeks to figure out the maximum awesomeness-to-time ratio I can achieve.

http://chicon.org/docs/program-grid.pdf

And I have a few questions for the experienced:

* Where are the autograph sessions at? I've been tasked to get Rothfuss's by my wife and I want to get Martin. I see the names listed but not where or when.
* How do you sign up for a kaffeeklatch?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I study it. wotf007

The autograph sessions are listed by number (location on the far left side of the page).

The session numbers refer to the list of authors at the bottom of the sheet. Look slightly up in the same column and you'll find the time/author slot.

generally the signups for the Kaffeeklatch is done at the convention, usually the day of 'kltach at the information or registration desk. The infomation for ChiCon 7 is going to be in the con programming book. If you want a very popular writer, show up early as they fill up fast.

Autograph sessions are usually in a specified area, also listed in the con book. (last year in reno it was in the dealers room, but its up to each con hwo that sort it all out.)
Can you tell I love me some worldcon? wotf001
