Thanks for the answers to my questions. I've been busy working up my "want-list" for the convention. Does anyone know if they've put out descriptions to each panel/event or will that come later? Some of the panel names are not obvious to their content.

Welcome to PanelOMancy, guessing what the panel is about from the title. NO, until you get there, check in and get you package and con book you'll have only a vague guess. Depending on the quality of writing from the fan who are running program afterwards you should have a better idea, but I;ve been at panels where the panelist had no clue.

All will be answered in the Pocket Program.

You know, the first ten or twelve Worldcons I went to the program book was the size of a
chapbook or a thin trade paperback, and the 2 or 3 pages of programming fit right in the middle. These
days the program book is a 200-page 8 1/2 x 11 book, and the pocket program's about
the size and wordage of a mass market paperback.

At ArmadilloCon last year they had a panel on Ghost Stories. Three panelists came with ghost stories (closer to what the description said), one person came ready to talk about how to write ghost stories. It was a little awkward, but Scott Johnson, resident ghost story collector, carried the hour.

I see some overlap on panels and such. But you're way ahead of me on the full planning. So much to see and do!

Keep your plans flexible, too. You never know when you might want to hit up a panel but suddenly find yourself in a conversation with a bunch of cool people or invited out to lunch or something. Last Worldcon there were tons of panels I wanted to go to, but I actually ended up spending a lot of my time in the SFWA suite chatting and listening to old pros. I think I learned at least as much that way as I would have going to all the panels (I still made it to some panels, but flexibility is key). wotf008

Of course, you have to come to my panels. Because I'll be brilliant. And have a mohawk.

(and Brad is moderating one of them, if you need a more famous draw 😉 )

My schedule looked kind of like that, and then my friends told me - you CAN'T do it all or you'll make yourself sick.

Just a suggestion? Mark highlight the ones you ABSOLUTELY want to go to. Then mark the others in a less definite but stand out kind of way. This way when it comes down to a choice, you've already made it.

Anyway - I see we're crossing on our schedule a little bit - I'll definiately see you on SF Novellette panel. 😉

They've now posted a day-by-day near-final program with descriptions and participant names, which means the rest of my workday is shot . . .

The autograph sessions are listed by number (location on the far left side of the page).

The session numbers refer to the list of authors at the bottom of the sheet. Look slightly up in the same column and you'll find the time/author slot.

Those are just the "official", con-sponsered autograph sessions. A number of major writers will
be signing in the dealers' room and their times will be announced on the p.a. system. For example,
I'll be signing new books at a couple of my publisher's tables during the weekend, and I always
put in an hour at Larry Smith's table (he's the biggest new-book dealer on the circuit). Other
writers will do much the same thing...so if you miss the official session, you can still catch
a number of them signing in the dealers' room.

Thanks for the info, everybody. I anticipated that it wouldn't hold up under the pressure of a good conversation, crowd at the bar, or spur-of-the-moment author signing, etc. I just wanted to have a "full" schedule to use as a guideline, so that I'm at no point wandering around, unsure of what to do--which is often my general tendency, lol.

Meet up suggestion:

I think a lot of us may be attending the "85. Short Story As Testing Ground" panel? It might be a good idea to meet right after. We can either grab some grub or get on the buses to the planetarium...

Or someone come up with something better. 😀

ETA: That would be Thursday night @ 7:30pm after the 6pm panel. 😉

This time would be excellent for me as well. As you said, maybe a bite for dinner and then off to the Planetarium for a couple hours. Sounds like a blast!

Sounds like a good meet up time. Another good time to meet up would be for breakfast since that's the least filled time of the day. We can also start a "Where are you at World Con" thread on the forums so people can post where they're located at any time.

And I still haven't nailed down my schedule except for the various George RR Martin panels/signings/etc. I'll probably just play it by ear. And my biggest concern today is all the stuff I'm bringing up: clothes, books to be signed, nice clothes for the Hugos, food for dietary reasons, etc.

Forgot about you coming in Friday, Martin. Saturday morning is the Codex breakfast, so Annie, Brad, myself and others will probably all be going to that . . . I'm free after 9:00 p.m. (or maybe even 7:30) on Saturday, if anybody likes the idea of a late WOTF Forumites dinner.

It's still not official, but Evil Martin is getting harder to restrain! Unofficial word has come through, including a lunch invitation, but no official word yet. August seems to be a pretty hectic month there, and prep for WorldCon has to be adding to that.

And yes, Evil Martin is particularly busy this week. He's dictating TWO stories as I drive, both featuring a character who's a cross between Captain Bligh and my favorite fencing coach.

Can we crash your lunch? 😀

And I'm good with dinner... though I suppose I should give someone my real name or phone number in case plans change at the last minute? I don't think I'll be taking my laptop with me...

In some ways a breakfast works better than a dinner.
1) It usually easier to do thing before panels than after them when you might get caught up in coversations.
2) evening parties are usually good and sometimes its tough to ditch them for a dinner.

That said I can do either.

thank you thank you thank you thank you wotf041 you are so absolutely sweet.

if it puts you in a tough position though, don't do it. I don't want you to jeopardize anything you might be developing with him. The main reason I'm pretty sure it didn't get lost, is that the online submission system still says "closed" instead of "rejected". I check it now and again to make sure I didn't miss an email they may have sent.

There will be WiFi in the conventiomn spaces -- but I expect ti to be VERY VERY SLOW. You see this is a SciFi convention, everyone will have a wireless device sucking up the limited bandwidth. Anything you want to read I woudl suggest pr-loading before you arrive.

I feel like an IDIOT! wotf016
At WorldCon, at least as recently as last year, there is a thing called the VooDoo board. It's a corkboard witha listing of all the registered memebrs and a set of car catalog type boxes, slips of paper, and push-pins. You can leave message for each other by slipping a noted into the right part of catalog (based on names) and then sticking a push pin into the board next to the person's name so that they can see that they have a waiting message.
It's how con goers did things before cell phones....
