I have hacked together 2700 for this. I'd be happy to exchange crits with other would-be entrants, though the genre is way out of my comfort zone and I offer no guarantees but (sometimes quite brutal) honesty in my opinions.

Thanks for the heads up on this contest Ishmael. I've been concentrating my efforts on SF. This gives me a reason to write fantasy, which I've been wanting to try for a while now.

Can I swap you for a story not in the competition, but under 2k?
Assuming you don't get lots of takers *in* the comp.
Up to you, no offense if you want to keep it fantasy.

A very useful crit from Dustin has helped me to sort out several problems with the story, with which I am now very pleased. I would still be happy to take a couple more exchanges in the interests of making it as good as I can.
