There's a small group of us who plan to write 1-3 NEW 450 word story openers over the next three months.
The idea is to hone our story-opening skills through writing-reading-critiquing a story's first two pages.

I'm down. I did some work on my 450 after the previous swap. I may have a specific question or two which I will ask separately. I'd like to see if I "fixed" the troubling issues.

@scott_m_sands Hi Scott! I don't have anything to swap yet, but I'd be happy to look at yours now. I'm having trouble deciding what to do for Q4, but I'd appreciate your advice when I actually get something down on paper.

Wanted to drop this open offer here: I will look at anyone's first page and offer my thoughts on the story anytime. Open door. I no longer have time for full critiques like I used to, as sad as that makes me, but I can do the first 450 words.
I've been reading slush for Apex Magazine for over a year now, am the judge for the monthly microfiction contest as well, and have moved into an Associate Editor position--so while I'm not a first reader for WotF, I do have some experience with slushing and first pages and am happy to read those and offer my thoughts. DM me for my email address.

That's great, Joe. Glad you feel your story is better (they almost always are with fresh eyes on them). Nice that you're encouraging others to do the same.

Hey since you are a slush reader at Apex (and well done on Associate Editor - can see why you would get a position like that) would you say it is a good idea not to ask you to look at something I might submit to Apex, or is it okay that you may have seen it before? I don't want to cross boundaries that make things iffy for you. Apex doesn't do anonymous submissions so I'm guessing it doesn't matter - but don't want to assume.
Not that I currently have to worry - the one monster length story you were kind enough to critique for me has been cut down by about 4K words but is still over the word count limit for Apex by almost 1500 - but for future ones....

@czing That's a great question! I can take a look at stories that are going to Apex - I'll just skip them in the slush pile We have plenty of slush readers, so no worries there.
However, if you're planning to submit to our monthly micro fiction contest, I can't read those as I am the sole judge. You can submit, but if the winner I choose is someone I know well, the top five stories will get passed up to one of the supervising editors.
