I'm two drafts into something cool, but waiting for quarter results always puts me in a spin. Getting twitchy over here!

So then, no news is good news!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Dave's time results didn't even consider coming out before the workshop, right? I remember that being the case. Though I've seen some stats... Where did those stats go?

I looked through my records under Dave's judging, and found that March 16, 2016 was the earliest result for Q1.

The rest of the time, Q1 results came in from mid to late April, with one arriving May 13.

@kent Oof. Definitely hoping for next week.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I almost want the results to come out after I turn in my current story, so I can focus on writing the new one and not ask myself a million questions about why the old one failed. Plus it takes out the sting of not making it, knowing I already have something submitted.

[adds a green and blue tent to the scene]

[stares off to the horizon]

[tents of all colors are popping up]

[smells of hot chocolate and scones]

[looks at watch and back at laptop]

[surely my Q2 story would benefit from some fuel]

2024 Q1 results: March 16th.
2023 Q1 results: April 10th.

Nope. Certainly not twitching while my Q2 sits unwritten.

I have a toddler running around the house, so life is definitely different, and even though she takes up a lot of my time, she's totally awesome. I should have kept writing more regularly since getting finalist. Now I'm trying again. My goal is to start by submitting every quarter and see where that takes me. Besides winning, how have you been?

[With Q2 in, the hobbit pops out from under the table of snacks, notices that scone and donut levels are low then heads to supermarket.]

So, say you actually place, what timeframe might we get that news as opposed to everyone else? Does anyone know?

In the usual time frame, the initial judging is completed by the coordinating judge (Jody Lynn Nye), and then Joni Labaqui notifies the finalists.

(In my finalist calls, Joni has gone through the rules with me to be assured that I have adhered to them. She has also asked me to confirm that, should I win, I still consent to have my story published by Galaxy Press. Also, if I do not win, would I agree to allow them to hold my story for possible inclusion as a published finalist in the anthology.)

NOTE: If a finalist is notified and does not consent to publication, they are dropped and the first semi-finalist is raised to finalist.

Once the finalists are positively identified, the coordinating judge sends the stories to that quarter's writer judges to identify the winners.

Joni then releases the rest of the results to all placed and unplaced entrants...On Thursday!

After final judging, winners are notified and then Writers of the Future publishes the list of winners and placements.

There is no hard and fast time frame beyond the quarterly deadlines. However, the publishing business being what it is, the fourth quarter is often judged faster than the others in order to maximize lead time for the printer.

Appreciate the good info, including your longer post about the process. I've been sitting here thinking that we're soooo late, and not having received Joni's call, that I'm likely not a finalist. Again. But your timeline raises my faint hope. 

Hey, Cray ... mind if I snatch one or eight of your scones? (I need more. I'm a big man.)

And back to editing on the Q2 entry. Look ahead, Doc, always look ahead. Looking behind just makes me stumble.

Just got a rejection email. I don't think I've had anything else from this current judge, so won't be bothering again. Clearly my writing isn't to her taste.

Oof. Just got mine. Perplexing. Good job to all who entered. Congrats to those who placed. And good luck to those still in the hunt!

HM for me. A bit of a different story, gives me a bit more info on tastes...

R for me, :(. Not surprised. I think my character was too young for wotf.
