This is my first time - definitely a nice feeling. Now I just need to make sure I don't procrastinate starting the next one...

Getting ready to submit this quarter and I realized I did something dumb on last quarter's submission. I put page numbers in, but not title and page numbers. I normally add my name when I put the title for submissions to publications, but I spaced it for WotF. I guess when I get the big R, I can quickly have next quarter's submission ready.

Oh well, I'm in this quarter.

Not a big deal. That won't get you rejected--leaving your name in those headers will. : ) But yes, title goes in the header along with the page number on each page in the upper right. Except on page one, select "Separate First Page" in your word processor.

Of course, if your title is "Super-Duper Moongirl and the Amazing Moon Dawdler," you might want to shorten it after the first page. : )

Best,

Moon

Thank you!

As for SUPER SECRET #0, I added that one later, and had to use zero to do so! It's surprising how many get that wrong, even my editing clients after I say read Shunn's Guide first before sending me their manuscript. Then I fix it to help them out, and the next time, it's still wrong. I think everyone wants to pretty their manuscripts up because proper manuscript format is so plain. But dressing for success is dressing right for the occasion, and there is indeed a proper format, with a few variations from publisher to publisher.

Anyhow, glad the Secrets helped you find your cufflinks.

This.
I've worked with some folks who've been around and they like to write in a certain format. OK. Work in your sweatpants, but when it's time to present yourself, dress up.

Good luck!

Thanks - seems like we have to write better just to get HM these days. The competition is getting harder in terms of number of entries and quality. But that's got to be good, right?

I only just finished my 1st draft of the story for this quarter. So those others of you worried seeing all these "ins" there's still plenty of time!

This, it is true! 16 days is more than enough time to write and edit a story if you have sufficient time and energy to invest during that time period.

Finally got myself entered for Q2. I missed out on last quarter due to work and grad school taking up a huge block of my time, but I made sure to dedicate some time for tweaking my ideas. I wanted to build on what I learned from my Q4 submission last year, which was honestly my first ever short story. Had my beta reader and writer's group go over the draft and help me with ideas for improvements to the final edits. Overall, I'm way more confident in this story than I was in my first. Good luck everyone!

Good job, earthkeeper78!

I hope you took the WotF Online Course as well. It helps you visualize the elements of a working story.

Best of success!

I've got a few ideas I'm tossing around upstairs. The biggest problem is trying to decide on which one I want to develop next. I'm just thankful that at the end of April, I'll have a lot more time to dedicate to writing since the semester will be over.

Not really, but I actually am a bit of an environmentalist irl. It's more a story that deals with issues like bullying, abuse of power, and marching forward even when life deals you a bad hand. I took a lot of my own thoughts and experiences from being bullied as a kid and built them into my MC.

Writing a novelette would be OK, but selling it is another animal.
20,000 words? There's like one market that may take that. 🙁

I also struggle with short stories, but have improved over the years. Hard part for me is the idea. Writing them isn't so bad. Submitting them is damn impossible. 😉

Any problems taking several novellas or novelettes and bundling to sell as an indy? I haven't done it yet, but realizing it could be done made me not so scared to produce works of that length.

It's viable, but I don't have the energy to pull that off anytime soon.

I did this with some comic fantasy stories (I think Dustin might remember them as my troll stories from the Hatrack forums).

I put them together in an ebook on Smashwords called Tales From Under The Bridge. It got some good reviews. I had bad things going on at the time and didn't get around to marketing it properly but sold a few all the same.
