I think I speak for all of us when I say that we are so shocked, it's genuinely beyond us to express.

Yes, but honestly I've felt something special about every story I've written in the last year but one.
To everyone else, thank you for the congratulations and well wishes!

Reading through this forum thread, I am inspired by everyone, R, RWC and HM who are turning a critical eye to their work to figure out what's missing. That is arguably the hardest thing to do as a writer and yet the most valuable skill you can develop!
I spent a year trying to figure out why my shelved novel was getting rejected before I found this contest and now I owe so much of my growth as a writer to this contest and this forum. I know what's wrong with that novel now, and why it needs to sit on the shelf for a bit but it's not out of the game yet. I learned subtle writing tools, how to make brevity beautiful, and I found my style and my voice here.
My new novel is an expansion of my Q4 V39 HM, and I submitted an expanded chapter of it for this quarter which got another HM. This new novel is getting a lot of traction in the world outside of WoTF. But MAN I'd really really like to break into the finals in this contest before there's any proing out, I have all my success to thank from this contest.
However...I'm subtly pleased not to have placed higher this quarter because my OCD brain is exceptionally satisfied by the shortlist pattern I've drawn in this contest. HM, SHM, HM, SHM, HM... lol! ?
Love you guys! Keep crafting.

Heck yeah, @ease! I'm late to the forum party as I've been traveling visiting fam.
I'm stoked for you but by no way surprised. You got a fantastic story and buckets of talent and dedication to the craft. That wait between calls was brutal on me. The insomnia was no joke. I hope you're faring better that I did. Fingers crossed we get to celebrate and learn together in Hollywood! & I'm excited to read more of what you cook up!

I had hoped this one would go further, but given my prior stories were an R and an RWC, my hopes were clearly outstripping my skills. Congrats everyone, wherever you place.
Congrats! You can cut yourself on that razor-thin margin between SHMs from Finalists. My winner came from a slightly-revised SHM. I entered it again only because the story I wrote for the quarter was held up at another market that I thought was gonna have a much quicker turn-around.
