I used to regularly get HMs and SHMs, I've slipped to 2 RWC's in a row. I didn't envisage going backwards.
I'm sorry for your disappointment. Growth is rarely ever a straight trajectory, full of peaks and valleys. Your previous results speak for themselves. You got this!

Ah well, just when I thought I'd get at least a mention and was wondering if there was a record for most consecutive mentions, I got my first straight R in just over 3 years! ?
I was going to retire this particular story but resubmitted it based on Jody's comments about checking her previous notes with resubmitted stories. My only change was an added sentence to foreshadow the ending. But I guess Jody didn't get to read this version.
Fingers crossed for ease!

@jeschleicher Thank you! Very much appreciate these words
I'm sure you being able to go from SHM to winner means though that either you were a top of the heap SHM, or made really significant changes. For mine I have no idea where it was in the SHM ladder, but I do know I don't (yet!) know of where I would make major changes. Some minor editing, but I'm still fairly happy with the story. I may sit on it a while. If something major to change that could change my placement I may re-submit in future. But for the next few I have some other things I'd like to try.
"...your motivations for wanting to write are probably complex. You may have a few great passions, you may want to be rich and famous, and you may need therapy."

Write fresh. The power of growing as a writer comes from creating new stories and growing with each one. If you want to become a professional editor, then rewrite and edit to your heart’s content. That’s what editors do. But writers write. You’ve got an SHM, which is a publishable story. If you want to become a professional writer, then send that SHM out to another market and write fresh for next quarter to give yourself a chance to grow even further.
Edit after reading further up the comments: yes, rewrites can win (as @jeschleicher proved) and having a backup story for when you just don’t have anything available is a good idea. But I analyzed a sampling of submissions in Q1 looking specifically at rewrites vs writing fresh. Yes, some rewrites improved their standing. But the majority remained static or even dropped in ranking. My recommendation for continued growth is to keep studying (have you checked out Wulf Moon’s Super Secrets thread?) and write fresh.

"To Catch a Foo Fighter" in DreamForge Magazine
"Milo Piper's Breakout Single that Ended the Rat War" in LTUE's Troubadours and Space Princesses anthology
"The Rise and Fall of Frankie's Patisserie" in Murderbugs anthology
"Felix and the Flamingo" in Escape Pod
"The Devil's Foot Locker" in Amazing Stories
This. I strongly recommend listening to @lost_bard. About this, and in general.
Yes, writing a whole new story feels like a lot more work than a little editing. But you can reach flow state with writing fresh, you can hit 1-2k words an hour. I don't believe you can find flow state with editing. I never have, and I believe it's why many have a mantra of "don't edit while you write."
So, with some luck and flow, it shouldn't even take you much longer than a revision and you can learn more and you get a new story out of it.

I too sit squarely in the write fresh camp and credit that motto with much of my growth over the past few years. My point with the SHM was that @gideonpsmith and all other SHMs are incredibly close to the prize in execution and skill. I second @lost_bard to send that story out to another market because it's a good one and deserving of a home. Maybe with time take a look at it. Something might jump out at you that needs tweaking as it did w/ my SHM: I stumbled a bit on my landing and had some sentences that went clunkity clunk clunk, deficiencies I wouldn't have noticed w/o the growth that came from dogged writing and study of the craft. But in the meantime, similar to the idea of passive income, make your SHM work for you out in the markets and write another story anew.

@krqueen_writes awesome!!! I wish the best for you this quarter.
“Stories are the collective wisdom of everyone who has ever lived. Your job as a storyteller is not simply to entertain. Nor is it to be noticed for the way your turn a phrase. You have a very important job—one of the most important. Your job is to let people know that everyone shares their feelings—and that these feelings bind us. Your job is a healing art, and like all healers, you have a responsibility. Let people know they are not alone. You must make people understand that we are all the same.”
