Perhaps in the past, volumes 1 - 10. Modern winners generally need a reason for something tragic to happen, and a character or two should reflect on it. But the story itself as a tragedy? Tougher to pull off.Anyone have insight as to how tragedies fare in the contest? Have any tragedies won?
Leah Ning's Yellow and Pink (Vol 36), to me, was tragic.

@writhmic yes, plenty! All of my fave winning stories are tragedies. Idk about Jody’s taste, she’s a riddle to me. But Dave loved those.
A Bitter Thing (34), An Itch (35), The Damned Voyage (35), Dark Equations of the Heart (35), Dirt Road Magic (35), Yellow and Pink (36), Foundations (36), Hemingway (37)
these are stories I consider sad. Super Duper Moongirl and A Certain Slant of Light (both 35) are both sad but have a glimmer of hope in the ending
if anyone knows Jody’s taste and whether she’s open to sad endings please definitely share

I had considered skipping this quarter as I've been feeling somewhat uninspired and my 3 attempts at a Q2 story seemed not to be yielding what I hoped for. Still, I uploaded my Q2 today - an edited version of one of the three stories I wrote. All I can do is cast it out there, think about something else, and see if anything good happens. Or not

In once again, for the fifteenth quarter in a row. Do I keep learning as I keep writing? Or is this beating my head against a brick wall? I can't see a trend in my ratings, but I've been encouraged time and again with good ones. So … I'll keep trying. I read stories of well-known authors who took years and years to get accepted. One friend just had his first publication after 22 years of trying. Who knows which one will suddenly make it? [smile]

Two scones please. Shorter wait - haha.
I'm finding so many issues by reading my story out loud. I'm getting used to the computer's voice.

Glad you did it, Gideon. It always encourages me to see any of us keep at it. Your list of subs and acceptances is impressive, so you're definitely doing something right. How is it that you're still meeting the non-professional terms of rule 5?
My list is 31 stories written, over 180 rejection letters, and (as yet) no acceptances. Still working on it.
