@rschibler I’ve been writing 20 years now and have been entering WOTF since 2005. So yeah it’s not a race; it’s a lifetime marathon.
I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James.
Yeah, a cert would be nice. Always writing to win. Certs are great encouragers!
Keep writing and the certs will begin to multiply. Sometimes a single HM in a bad year can keep you going for the next year. That is until one becomes addicted, and then it doesn’t matter because you’ll write no matter what.

Yeah, i sometimes spill over into lit. Sometimes i write POETRY! Which is great for the rejection mill, cause no one wants it, but slows down rejections overall cause markets hardly read it. I picture the lone poetry reader with tissue boxes for slippers, in a cardigan so stained and worn it’s hard to actually see…
I know self publishing is a path for success, for many. It’s prolly my age that makes me wary of it. But i have a small collection from the 1990s i might try it with… Any good resources onnit?

Poetry! Whew, there's a tough one. I've read so much BAD poetry in SF magazines that I mostly just don't even read it any more. Except that it's short, so it reads quickly.
For self-publishing, our local writers league had a very good presentation on it recently. Here are links that might work:
SLIDES ONLY: https://tinyurl.com/f943xr6z/
SLIDES PLUS AUDIO: https://tinyurl.com/3tpbt5jj/
The key difference is that publishers can sell thousands of copies of your work, but only give you a pittance as royalty. In self-publishing, you might sell hundreds of copies but get as much as 70% of the return. The path into regular publishing is through agents; publishers mostly don't even look at unsolicited manuscripts. For older authors, like myself, agents don't want to bother working with you because they want a long-term return on their investment of time.
Write so long as words keep flowing...

There's a Facebook group called 20 Books to 50k that has some good self-publishing resources.

I'm up to 45 rejections this year. One yesterday and another today but three submissions today including wotf Q1.
I've not written as much as usual this year.

I'm up to 63 R's for the year. It'd be more if I had more writing time; most of my stories are going to markets with long waits, these days. I haven't had time to write anything but flash since, I think, May or June? Didn't even consider sending out flash until September. The flash has helped boost my numbers, though.
If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it. ~ H.G. Wells
If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. ~ Mark Twain

I've just cracked 40 rejections recently, but that's a marked turn, the most submissions I've put out since 2016/2017 when I was at my most active. I'll be hoping to push that number higher again in 2022, though.

Lessen learned. Don’t fear rejections even the best get them. Just keep trudging along. 2 more results to come in for this year from this contest.

This year so far I've written one story, which is my Q3, and I'm in rough draft writing for a second story that will probably be Q1. I don't rack up the rejections like everyone else because I don't have a rejection goal. I have a goal of writing stories in such a fashion as to satisfy my writer soul.
I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James.
I'm probably at around 15-20 rejections for the year but I don't submit as much as I should, and there are several pendings for my last manuscript and a couple of short stories still out there.

Okay, I wanted to let everyone know still final programing going on and will be closer to the morning as one last little bug ironing out on the email. Not a big bug but I wanted to alert anyone that is waiting to go to sleep looking at their email inbox...
For the record I have the list of winners!!!! That is not the bug.

Haha, the power of the internet. As someone once said, "Originality is the art of concealing your sources." Harder and harder to do these days, so on top of it just being the right thing, best to always be honest!

Now that the blog post is up, I can talk! It's been absolutely awful keeping this information to myself, especially after the news leaked out anyway, but I was asked to wait. My heart has been aching for everyone and I hope that finding out where you placed eases that ache for many of you.
That being said, I am excited to announce that but
It was the craziest quarter I've ever heard of. Joni called me on a Monday afternoon to tell me I'd made finalist, and called me back Thursday evening to let me know I hadn't placed. Four days, and I was gagged the whole time. I'm still processing.
I missed being able to celebrate the finalist with everyone--it made the not-win a little harder to bear. The first time I made finalist I was so thrilled to have proven it was possible I didn't care about winning. Well, this time I did. I love the story and I wanted it to be my way to the workshop. Alas, it was not to be. I have great hopes for my Q4 story, and such hope for everyone here, too.
SUPER CONGRATS TO N.V. Haskell and the other winners and finalists.
I know it feels like a hollow sentiment, but finishing and submitting a story is something to be proud of, regardless of how it fares here or elsewhere in the writing world. If you're feeling down about your results, hang in there! Look at my signature--sometimes it takes time to figure out what we're doing! Take heart and keep writing.
