I'm right down to the wire, but I'll make it - just have a last sweep for grammar and clarity and then I'll submit. Probably tomorrow just to make sure I stay cool.

R, HM, R, Pending
I did final mark-ups yesterday. Edits today. Polish tomorrow.
But...barring computer failure...I will be in before the bell rings.
Good Luck and Godspeed to all my last minute cohorts!

Sounds super cool and congrats --but I'd edit out your story specifics here. Don't want your masterpiece dq'd. I'm finishing mine as well. Down to the wire. Wish you luck
I edited. Does that mean you have to edit your comment too for the same specifics?
And I'm in as of 10:35 pm EST
Officially in as of 11:11pm EST - good luck to everyone still polishing, you can do it!

I wasn't planning to submit anything for Q4, but getting results for Q3 inspired me to dust off a piece I wrote a few months ago to flesh it out just a tad bit more. I got that submitted yesterday.
Released novels, available for purchase: Troll Song and Forgotten Legends. More books are on the way, waiting only for cover art.

Latch on to the inspiration and don't let go.

Whew! I'm in. My first entry without a really bad rookie mistake (that I know of). My Q1 lacked a good opening. Q2 started with the character waking up. And my Q3 went in without its headline! I really like this story. I'll be disappointed if it does no better than R even though I know the competition for HMs is fierce and I'm still a noob.
Congrats to everyone else who is in. Good luck!

Results were mid-November last year.
I don't guess we will get that this year.
I wonder if Q4 has the highest number of submissions? Everyone trying to get one in the current year? Pretty sure I read there is a drop-off in Q1.

From what I understand, Q4 tends to be the busiest.

Whoa, so retro!
Actually, I always loved paper submissions. It gave the whole process of sending in a story a little bit of an event feel. But convenience wins out, in the end. I think my last paper sub was to a little magazine that still only takes paper.

Yeah, I've never submitted on paper before. It was kinda cool, heheh. This story had a particular reason I needed to mail it in (that I won't say for fear of being rejected) so of course I go scouring the rules and discover that it only has to be postmarked on the 30th, not arrive then. So fingers crossed it gets there, and hopefully they will notify me when it does.... Also, it says if you supply the return postage they will send it back to you, so I thought that sounded cool.

Yeah, a lot of the paper sub markets were that way, both for short fiction and novel pitches. You could either provide a small envelope pre-paid for just the response, or a larger one if you wanted the whole manuscript back. I did the latter when it was difficult for me to print things like that, but switched to the former later on, after I got a decent and cheap to run mono laser printer.

Interesting. As a younger person who sometimes feels out-of-place in the modern world, I like hearing about how things used to work. 😀
I really need to stop waiting until the last minute, but I'm in.

I just barely made it in with 11 minutes to spare. That was an interesting experience trying to write like a crazy person on the last day.I cut it so close, I had to search and replace placeholder names with ones from the internet name generator, lol. https://www.name-generator.org.uk/
It was kind of cool though to see what I could do with a deadline. I felt like one of the old time magazine pulp writers!
I only had time for a quick proofread and polish. Hopefully I caught the spelling errors and smoothed out the phrasing enough.
The story is good though. Nice character arc and crazy original.
We'll see how I do!
I spent 4 hours cutting 5% of the words and smoothing some prome and got in at 6:30pm UK time, just before I went out for the evening. I usually submit on the penultimate day, so it was late for me.

I submitted with 10-11 minutes to spare one time too. It's really pushing it, but it does feel so good to see what you can accomplish if you really really try.
good luck!

I know, objectively, that it's not time to twitch because the Q3 winners haven't even been announced.
I know this.
I'm still twitchy tonight.
