Forty-five million miles is less than half the distance to the sun. What a pity that fewer students are studying science these days so this knowledge is now less widespread. What's more they are buying fewer newspapers. The more I think about all this the less I like it.

I watched a young man print his name because he couldn't do cursive writing yesterday. How times change.

Cursive is an instrument of the devil. I stopped using it the instant they stopped making me pretend to care about it in school.

I tried to write cursive the other day, just for giggles. My fingers didn't even know how to start.

I invented my own script about 20 years ago designed to make my writing faster and more legible (my cursive is horrible and my standard printing is slow AND horrible). I've been using it ever since. Then my daughter started school and they taught her something called "Denalian". Almost exactly what I came up with myself wotf017

Or even D'Nealian?

Personally I decided (aged about 13) that cursive writing was too boring and easy, so I decided to combine cursive for some letters with a version of italic print for others.

I call it Ishmaelian.

I can't even write by hand any more. I tried to sign my name the other day, with an actual pen, and my hand cramped up. wotf005

Cursive handwriting is an art form. I once saw a veterinary's bound ledger at a garage sale. It was filled with his observations of diseased animals and treatments... all handwritten in the most perfect cursive I've ever seen.
No errors, nothing crossed out. Tiny. He was also a surgeon after all. I'd intended to go back with some cash to buy it, but we didn't make it back in time. I did tell owner that it belonged in a museum. It will probably be viewed like calligraphy someday. I still use cursive. It's faster than printing.

That's my break for the day... back to editing ... down to the last 45 pages of my novel, then I'll start a search for an agent. Grateful for any recommendations!

I wonder. I may not physically be a mother but I do seem to have given birth to an awful lot of characters. Do they count, perhaps?

Depends. Did any of them send you a card? Phone call? Breakfast in bed? Of course, all the things I've done to my characters, I can hardly blame them for their neglect.

I did get an email on behalf of one of them. Unfortunately the sender didn't want to talk to me. And I got three more of those a day late. But then some of mine are an inconsiderate lot.

During my younger days I was a single parent for awhile.
I received chuckles when I made the statement I should be recognized on Mothers Day.
Alas, the laughs were all I got.
Oh well, Fathers Day isn't that far away.

Conceived of a plot and characters, carried them in your gut for over nine months, labored to produce them, given birth to a completed product... perhaps busting your tailbone in the process, nursed them at your breast....

Nawww. You deserve more than a card. You deserve a bloody trophy.

I got a phone call from one of mine. Breakfast in bed? Get real. I had to make my husband's his and he sent me out to buy my own gift. Course he did that with my engagement ring, too. He's not a shopper.

Ha, neither am I. But at least this way my wife got what she actually wanted instead of something "similar" which never works out for anyone.

Besides, her real gift was peace and quiet when my daughter and I went away for the weekend to visit my parents which coincidentally was my mother's gift as well (she loves seeing her grandkids).

Is this why they give us such an unnecessarily large and weighty trophy, that we may fight off the horrors that lurk within?

A darkness so thick it is indistinguishable from the velvet overcoat the first winner left behind, someone devoured so completely that their name is stricken from the record, and the other three quarterly winners are named in their stead. The only weapon in this blackness is the light that seeps through the crack in the door; and thus they arm us with an oversized prism, so that we may capture the light, bend it and wield it in defence of our minds. The faint rainbow within the glass monolith awarded to the winner is our only reminder of lives full of colour and experience, before we were lost to the darkness of that most terrible of curses--a writing career.
