Ok.. I have to ask... aghhhhh... how close are we to the end? Weeks? Days? Hours? I'm being silly. Of course, not hours. Right?
Well, the end for any one of us might come about any hour, or any minute now.
The end for everyone (i.e. the formal announcement of winners, finalists, sem-finalists, SHMs and HMs) probably not for many weeks yet.

Apropos to the discussion of outliers on Duotrope, I'm sure folks noticed that the most recent outlier for WOTF was posted as having come in on the 9th when it was only the 8th. I'm assuming that the date being wrong/impossible made the system discount that entry from the analysis.
My thoughts exactly.

I received my bad news last night. Despite my story being a little short and the content probably a little more different than they wanted, I had to try. Always try! People do not be discouraged by these rejections! It's just a sign that you didn't write THEIR version of an awesome story. There are many different versions of awesome stories.

My sincere condolences, Kats, and a firm second on your sentiment. If you aren't trying, you've lost without even getting out of the gate. (please pardon the horse racing metaphor--triple crown season is coming before long.) Now you can get that story out to a market where it just might be their version of awesome. Good luck!

Ditto and ditto, except mine's probably shorter, and with donkey and/or unicorn bone(s).

My commiserations to those who have received rejections so far.
I'm staying focused (more or less successfully) on getting writing and submitting done. Finished a very short story today and submitted two others over the past few days. My Q2 is restless. Not ready for submission (still out with first readers), but I'm antsy to have it submitted so I have one less thing to think about, though it's preferable to the tension of waiting on continued results for Q1.
Write write submit! Write write submit!

Do acceptances come in the form of phone calls? I only ask because I've been having phone troubles and can only be reached by email.
Also, anyone else here apply to Clarion West? That's also a nail-biting wait....

Only finalists get phone calls and I believe you are a couple of weeks out at least before that happens.

As someone who went through this, just keep your eye out on the finalist list when it's announced. When the finalist calls went out for the quarter I eventually won my answering machine had stopped working, and I was rarely home since I was doing a lot of overtime. I found out I was a finalist when the press release went out.
Joni not being able to contact you will not stop you from placing in the top 8 as a finalist. However, should that happen you should contact her immediately afterwards so she knows the situation. I did that and gave her my cell (since my house phone was no longer an option) so she'd be able to reach me later on when first, second, and third place were chosen.

Did I mention I was rejected last week?

Last year, Q1 results took seven weeks from first rejections to finalist announcements (March 3 to April 21). Then those lucky folks in the latter category got to wait until JUNE before hearing whether they'd won.
Of course, that means nothing for this quarter. But I'd like to think that it's a slightly more content-rich nothing than Qs 2, 3, and 4, as it is also a Q1 that bumped up against an early ceremony week.
I haven't seen anyone reference anything but straight rejections so far this quarter, which is an interesting twist on the usual mixed stream of Rs and HMs coming out togther.

So... so there's a good chance that some of us will have to submit for Q2 w/o knowing our Q1 results yet?
I just can't even contemplate that before coffee.

Likely. At the very least, if you manage to wrangle a critique, it probably won't come before the deadline. I got my crit from Q4 in January, after I had already submitted for Q1, which meant I couldn't apply the lessons learned. I still think it was OK, but it might have helped.

I have a feeling it would be easier to submit Q2 without knowing Q1 results.
Don't know why. Just a gut feeling, I guess.

That's usual from what I've seen. The days of finding out what you've gotten from the last quarter before submitting to the current quarter are infrequent and a new phenomenon.
Duotrope shows signs of activity once more...
If this quarter were to follow last year's Q1 timing exactly, then KD will be announcing she's sent all results to Joni on March 22. Finalists will be getting calls in the two or three days after that. About three weeks later, they'll be allowed to crow in public.
Which, as I've said before, means nothing, really, but it's fun to contemplate. (Yes, Martin, between useful writing sessions and translation assignments and cooking and cleaning and chasing after a three-year-old and breaking up screaming matches between my eleven- and thirteen-year-olds. And drinking heavily. Just joking. 😉 )

Good call! How did you nail it? Was it the same pattern before, or were you just playing the odds that after several quiet days, something had to happen soon?
