Seriously though, I'd say if it is vital to the story, and it is not excessively graphic, leave it in. When you say non-human, though, are we talking inter-species lovin'? Or is it a non-human narrator watching human sex? Whatever the case may be, if it truly serves the story, it probably belongs in the story, though of course there are lots of ways to dramatize the same scene.

I agree with Patrick, if it's penis, leave it in.

After a year of this, I have decided... It is time to share a secret I have kept hidden from you all for all these many months... But today is a day when you need it most... And so at last, I will share my secret... But I will obscure it, so that those who cling to other approaches will not be disturbed by my secret... While others can read it, and be comforted...
For I can now tell you: I have the secret, the all-important pattern for deciphering and predicting WotF results and timing... And here it is...
There is no pattern...
Ommmmm... Ommmmm... Ommmmm... Ommmmm... Ommmmm...
Nice. Martin, don't reveal all the writing secrets now. It's like that special moment in the Matrix when Neo realizes he can see and manipulate the code. The "no pattern for rejections" is sort of that moment only self actualization can bring you. So in the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs people need to know they are safe first (and believe it).
Not that I'm a fan at all of Maslow...the idea has its flaws.
Ok back to editing...
ETA: Ok I must have come into this conversation at the wrong time. I just scrolled above and saw the word "penis" and people voting on if they should keep it or not.
*slowly backing away*

I agree with Patrick, if it's penis, leave it in.
If you think about it, roughly half of the YA audience WOTF guidelines are trying to protect sees and even handles one several times a day.

On a more boring note, just checked my email and I'm still in.
Are we taking a vote on whether or not to keep said reproductive appendage in or take it out? I'm thinking most people will vote to keep it in.

This is a question for those of you who submitted by post last quarter: around when did the postal rejections/hm's go out? I know she read them last. I'm just curious how long a delay there was between her reading them, and then the response being mailed out.
Nothing for me yet...

greenroom,
This quarter is fracked because of the ceremony.
Also consider, Q4 needs to be wrapped up with a hard deadline because of the show.
Q1 does not.
For Q3, I got my call 9 weeks after the close of the quarter.
R's are still eeking out, no one else is notified, and we're a few days short of 13 weeks...

I'm aware that each quarter is different. I wasn't asking in an attempt to guess when responses would come out this quarter. I was just curious when people who mailed in submissions for Q4, rather than submitted online, received the actual notifications in the mail for Q4. I don't recall seeing anyone posting that 'hey, I just received my response in the mail' last quarter. But then, maybe I have a selective memory...
I got my Q4 semi finalist Dec 29th.
I didn't get my crit until Late Feb. I'm assuming because they were behind with the event planning.
That must have already put them behind this quarter.
I guess it'll happen when it happens :/

I got a rejection this evening.
Then I got another one.
Neither of them from Writers of the Future!
Both were expected, but let's hope rejections aren't like buses, and come in threes.
First rejection was my ridiculous, humorous, outrageous and utterly uncategorisable flash alligator story from Analog.
Second rejection was my first submission to Daily Science Fiction, who famously want flash, so I sent them the longest story I've ever written. It's not even very good.
Anyway, I don't want any more tonight... I don't want any more tonight... I don't want any more tonight... I don't want any more tonight... I don't want any more tonight... I don't want any more tonight...

I don't have a semi to my credit but if you're predicting the future, that's not a bad way to go about it.
I'm thinking of sending everyone on that list a PM. How cruel would that be?
