And if he *was* a Finalist, wouldn't he be prohibited from saying so, which, ok, I suppose the Duo entry *doesn't* say "Hey look at me! Finalist, baby!!" but c'mon.

Well, it's possible... I mean, I can imagine... A writer uses Duotrope PRIMARILY to record results for him/herself. If I had results (and I dispute the notion that Finalist is a result up until the time that Winners are announced, but let's go with it for now) and I wanted to record those results, I might completely forget that the "brag box" is on. So using the tool for its primary purpose happens to also invoke its secondary purpose, unintentionally breaking the embargo.

On the other hand... Coming in at the same approximate time as a whole bunch of HMs, I'm guessing it's an HM reported as an "acceptance". The Finalist and Semi notices will be on their own timing, not necessarily the same as the HM timing.

They have a "Pending: Shortlisted" option now, which is what I'd list a finalist as. It's not an acceptance until you win. but yeah, I'm guessing it's another HM. Will these dopes stop skewing the data?

Congrats on the HMs, all! I know some of you are happier than others, but it's sill an honor none the less.

Has she been? Hmm, my HM says to read the Daily Kick, but it doesn't say he's the coordinating judge, just a judge. And I already get his kicks, though, I must admit, I haven't been reading them since Stephen King bashed Stephanie Meyer. Not because King bashed Meyer, but because of the responses it caused.

Sounds like I missed a tempest in a teapot.

That makes me very happy inside...

As you should be. I don't like it when writers tear each other down publicly. Unless they've said or done something truly horrible, it looks really unprofessional and makes the rest of us look even crazier.

Ah! I hadn't seen that status before. I tend to see the world as very binary. Well, trinary... The cat is alive (Accepted), the cat is dead (Rejected), or NNiNN about the cat (Pending).

Grats to the HMers (hummers?)

That's top 10%.

Especially to the newcomers like anarresti.

Are any current HM'ers LAMPS?

I'm curious to know if I'll be getting an e-mail or just something in the regular mail. I didn't include a SASE, figuring that my two e-mail addresses on my coversheet was a hint.

I don't know if it's what King said so much as it's Meyer's success that has made the Daily Kicks occasionally unappealing. Even when he's not explaining how King's opinion is just-one-guy-who-doesn't-get-it, he's frequently mentioning: One of my students is prolific. Maybe if you go to my workshop you will be too. Amirite? wotf011

Which is fine and true. But might come up more than is necessary, and turns me off to some of his lessons. Maybe I don't want to write like Stephanie Meyer. And maybe punctuating several articles with "and you can too" isn't the best way to teach people like me.

Also: Yeah, I think that's pretty much what Joni says every quarter. Thanks for clearing that up for us!

I do apologize for the delay. We have had the misfortune, if you don't already know, of loosing our coordinating judge, K.D. Wentworth to cancer just this last week. She judged your story and gave you this honor of Honorable Mention. Please see our tributes on-line and if you care to communicate anything about her, please do so.

...

That's what I got. Sorry for the misinformation.

Not only is Joni made of steel, but she's a class act as well. She didn't have to answer: Did K.D. get to my story? But for those of us who in a small way wrote specifically for K.D., this is nice to know.

Crickets, here. I gave them an SASE, but postage went up after I sent it so who knows if it will reach me. I also put Post-Its saying me ms. was disposable and they could notify me via email.

Yeah, that is pretty kickass, given the current ambiguity.

Actually, this is a rare case where I think explaining it made the better joke. It's like the Henway joke: it forces the recipient to ask for the punchline.

(But I suspect you knew that...)

No LAMPS reported on Duo. Before this wave, the # of pending postal subs was 9. It's still 9. There's a dropdown box where you can filter the results to All, postal or electronic.

Thanks, Martin. I'm a little ho-hummy on this one; I wrote the story specifically for WOTF, and if this didn't do it, I don't know that I *can* do it for this market. I did make one really stupid, simple physics mistake (which I shouldn't have made, and which was really easy to correct, and is in the new version about to be sent out), but I'd figured that if the story would have been finalist material without the mistake, KD would give me semifinalist and write, "this here teeny one-line mistake is what kept your story from being a finalist." So I guess it wasn't finalist material to begin with. At least not for KD.

I suppose I could send in the fixed version for Q3, given there's a new set of eyes judging now, but I don't know how I feel about that, or if it's even kosher. To be honest, I'm not sure if I want to win the contest....which is a whole 'nother kettle of fish related only to my terror of a week as intense as the workshop and gala week.

Much madness is divinest sense, to a discerning eye; much sense, the starkest madness. (Emily Dickinson)

I've been wondering about sending in old stories with some spit and polish. I don't know if I would, but I might have one or two that I could rework extensively and try again with. Not sure it's allowed though...

It's allowed, and some people have won that way.

Caveat: It's allowed as long as it wasn't a semi or a finalist.

Meghan's story, "The Siren" was a previous reject turned winner. (With Kathy having read them both.)
So was "The Hangar Queen."

Late to the party again! So excited to get some happy news and HMs are on the way out. First wave of HMs WOOHOO!! As a LMPS I still don't know. LMPS can still have anything from a R and above. I'll go check my junk box just in case....

ETA: Nope nothing there either. Also got the mail for today and nothing there. I'm also probably going to resub this story too at some point. I've done a lot of work with it since December and now I'm really happy with it. I'd probably sub it to some quick markets first.

@ Martin - nope, and I have a hood-mounted model when the need for serious firepower arises.

And now, I have something to report. It just figures that I would be the one to get an oddball result. I've been Drafted!
------------------------

Dear Entrant,

I wanted you to know that were placed in the category of "drafts" in the computerized system of the contest. This means that you did not complete the form for the first quarter of the contest (this was the quarter that started on 1 October and ended on 31 December). You may be very well aware of this but then you may not, which is why I'm writing to everyone in that category. If you thought you had submitted and did not go into the sytem again or attempt again, please let me know. I'll make sure to help you the next time you enter. If you are all set, or changed your mind, no need to respond.

Best,
------------------

Why is this odd? Well, one, I submitted on paper, so I'm not sure how it could end up as a draft? And two, it came to an email address that wasn't on my paper submission.

I'm guessing, here, so bear with me - maybe I made an account with that email and forgot I did so? I never intended to submit electronically, and I have no memory of making an acct., with that email addy. Maybe there's an Evil Kary running amok?

For the mo, I will assume this is user error as in, goofball Kary screwed something up), and I will be hearing soon about my real entry?

Those acceptances aren't finalists who have been called. Just FYI. I highly doubt calls will be going out for a while judging from the email I got today. Apparently KD hadn't made her final decisions, so it will be up to the new judge, whoever that is, to sort those out. Some of us are in for an even longer wait with stories in limbo (because the new judge might have wildly different tastes, so what might have been a maybe for KD could be a straight reject for new person).

My final quarter is turning into an epic. Do not want.
