Personally, I prefer just roasting marshmallows - the chocolate and the graham crackers always break on me. But every once in a while I'll go for the whole shebang.

Those chocolate striped shortbread cookies work nicely for s'mores, too, as do chocolate covered graham crackers. I've even been known to spread a little peanut butter on the cracker before the chocolate arrives. I do not, however, recommend toasted Peeps in s'mores. Toasted Peeps are fine alone. If you do it just right, the granular sugar coating turns into the crackle on top of creme brulee. But the bit of flavor in that coating doesn't mesh well with the rest of the s'mores ingredients.

These, on the otherhand...

Those round crackers are yummy, Elinor. Also, baked beans on toast is yummy, too. (Though I never tried it with melted cheese on top.) Not a huge fan of roasted marshmallows (though they are fun to roast and catch on fire). When camping, I skip the s'mores and look for the marshmallow launcher. Um. Just kidding. I don't actually like marshmallows that much, but I'll take a tasty berry pie with ice cream any day!

I think they're crackers made with cream. =) Like cream biscuits or something, but in cracker form.

I think I've had these. If so, they're a bit stiffer than a saltine, and slightly less crispy, and there's no salt at all, not on top nor in the dough (ok, there probably is but I couldn't taste it). But they're not sweet, either.

This, from the land of Vegemite? When Men at Work made the stuff briefly popular in the US, I tried some. I have some pretty exotic tastes. I really wanted to like it. But I took one dab, stuck it on my tongue, and spit it out. I tried some more on toast, and I threw it out. The entire, expensive, imported jar followed the toast.

Bah, Americans! You have no taste! To be fair, I've never tasted Vegemite, but if it's anything like Marmite it's extremely yummy. Marmite on cream crackers, yum.

Marmite made me wish I had some Vegemite to cleanse my palate...

I can say that Vegemite, similar in taste to Marmite, is low in fat, does not contain butter, chocolate or marshmallow and doesn't need to be roasted over a fire. It's fine when spread thin. but some do put it on a bit thick. Think of it as semi-dried or reduced beer.

The thing is: when I hear Aussies describe Vegemite (or Brits describe Marmite), it REALLY sounds like something I would enjoy. So the fact that I find it vile is doubly disappointing.

I can say that Vegemite, similar in taste to Marmite, is low in fat, does not contain butter, chocolate or marshmellow and doesn't need to be roasted over a fire. It's fine when spread thin. but some do put it on a bit thick. Think of it as dried beer.

The thing is: when I hear Aussies describe Vegemite (or Brits describe Marmite), it REALLY sounds like something I would enjoy. So the fact that I find it vile is doubly disappointing.

The trick to eating Marmite is to spread it thin with plenty of butter. Your cracker or slice of toast should be a light golden brown, not black. If it's black you've put too much on!

Cream crackers are great also, though.

I've tasted marshmallows and I found them uneatable. It's probably due to the fact that every country has some foodstuff that don't take well to exporting and you have to go there to enjoy them. Maybe the same applies to vegemite (which I've heard Men At Work sing about but I've no idea what it is).

I snack on those round crackers all the time (probably too much considering the amount of butter that's baked into them, but oh well), especially made into a sandwich with lots of creamy peanut butter inside. Haven't tried making s'mores out of them, but there's a first time for everything

Up until this thread, I'd never even heard of Marmite/Vegemite before. What exactly does it taste like?

Well... My Vegemite experiment was in the 90s. My Marmite experience was around a decade ago. So I can't remember details. But I remember promising myself to never make that mistake again! Wikipedia says, "It is salty, slightly bitter, and umami or malty – similar to beef bouillon." Well, I remember salty. I remember bitter. But malty? I love malt in just about anything, but it didn't taste malty to me. The smell was intriguing; but the taste was unlike anything I've ever tried. And not in a good way.

But far, far worse was the time my sister brought home some durian. That's like eating jellied gasoline!

Saw that stuff on Bizarre foods. It's illegal to take on public transport in the country of origin due to the smell. We found frozen Durian at a local Asian market and my wife bought it along with some Durian candy. It is the most vile stuff ever, but for some reason she likes it.
