This could be the elusive pattern.... could it not?

Possibly. I know not all quarters line up their holidays as nicely as Q3 had, but given that one is coming up in a few days, and finalists haven't been notified, (although I'm not entirely convinced of this) that seems as likely a time as any for her to make the calls.

I fully expect to check the forum Tuesday morning and see a post saying someone knows someone who got their call.

Sigh.

And to add more personal speculation into the fray, which has no basis in fact beyond intuition, I believe the judges have the eight stories already, and are reading them.

The times between press releases will be short, as it was for the illustrators.

D

Given the time lag, I have to agree. I can't imagine there were THAT many LAMPS to read. I suspect that the HOLDS were tentative finalists until the LAMPS had been dealt with... otherwise, why inform them that they were anything at all? This is wild speculation on my part with no facts to back up my guesses. But I think you're right on the money.

And this is all for Q1 still? O.o Oh dear, I'm still going to have a long wait for my first submission! (Q2) *Induces coma to make the time pass*

Heh, yes. I'm assuming though that Joni is quite smart enough not to phone any of us far-flung folks at 3 in the morning, should phoning be necessary, but watching email inboxes is another matter entirely. wotf007

This is extremely unusual and a result of KD Wentworth passing away. I expect Q2 to take a bit longer than normal as they catch up, but not this long.

As an aside: I don't know if anything exciting will grace the inboxes of WotF contestants today--but I do know that if you're a subscriber to the Daily Science Fiction you'll be getting a copy of my story next Thursday. wotf013 So, you have that to look forward to at least. Except, when I submitted for Q1, I was still living in the States...oh well, I took my phone with me so I know she won't be contacting me that way.

No thanks necessary. I think on that one I had like one point and it was a copy editing thing. That was a very solid story (Hint: EVERYONE go read Krystal's story when it comes out). And reading your stuff is never a burden. There are some really talented people on this board, you're one of them.

Hmm, if Joni is sending Q3 confirmations it doesn't sound like she's doing other things right now and it's 10.42pm here. wotf017

I'm beginning to think the finalists must all know who they are by now and that, although I never really expected it, I'm definitely not one now. wotf012

It looked very much like an automated email. It could've just gone out without any action on her part. (But I'm liking the Evil Joni theory myself. Evil Joni watches this thread, sends out email, watches the panic posts in response, and chortles to herself.)

OK, now Evil Joni is trying to ruin my reputation as a prognosticator. (How do you ruin that reputation when I'm always wrong?) Earlier today I said nobody puts out two press releases on the same day because you want to give the first one time to get attention. So of course, here's another press release today. This one's announcing that there's still time to submit for Q3.

(From the closet where I have him bound and gagged and locked up, Evil Martin mumbles. "Almo a i ey'r uili u o o in..." I think he's saying, "Almost as if they're building up to something...")

Seems the gag isn't very effective, hmm? Must be a manufacturing defect. Maybe if you stuffed a few marshmallows in his mouth first? wotf013

Great. My horoscope talks of time traveling aliens and now Evil Joni. Just great.
Maybe I should finish my Q3 instead of checking the forum every 5 minutes....

wotf003

I figured it out. They are trying to keep me from entering Q3 by tying me up checking statuses. Clever...

Now Joni's just funnin' with me... I just got ANOTHER confirmation that my Q3 story has been received.

Now, I'm going crazy.

I sent an email to Joni a few weeks ago to confirm that my Q2 submission had been received (because I never got the confirmation email for it). She responded to it yesterday asking for the name of the story so she could check. Then I got ANOTHER confirmation that my Q3 story had been received today, so I thought she found my Q2 story and threw it into the Q3 bucket or something. I freaked out thinking that not only did my Q2 submission not reach the right quarter, but also that I would be disqualified for Q3 since I would now have two stories in that quarter.

So, I sent another email today asking for a clarification. It seems it is more likely that the two emails were merely coincidental. It was just bad timing that another slew of third quarter confirmations happened to have been sent out exactly one day after Joni sent me the first email. I wouldn't have known that if not for Martin's mention of it here.

Re: The Wait.

That video definitely captures the wait. Somehow so mundane, yet every moment is filled with potential suspense. I found myself contemplating the meaning of life.

Also, while consulting my extensive Dr. Seuss collection and reading "The Places You'll Go" to my son (who graduated preschool today), I found myself feeling like I'd fallen into a slump. The part where everyone is trapped in the station and waiting for things to happen to them (waiting for a bus to go, a car to arrive, a fish to be caught, ect). The character is recommended to go make things happen. That book is filled with such good wisdom.
