I wonder who among us are the cattle.

That was the angle I thought of first too.

Moo! Mooo!

Obviously, I'm one of the cattle as I ruined the experiment. Next time I'll know better.

I've been thinking about this, thinking about the purpose(s) of a cattle drive in order to think what the analogy might be. If I understand correctly, a cattle drive delivers the cattle to a market or to a railhead. It allows the meat to transport itself fresh to the destination and feed itself along the way by grazing. The modern alternatives would be either to transport them by vehicle (faster, and the meat still arrives fresh; but there are fuel costs, and herding the cattle into the vehicles is a chore), or to slaughter and butcher them on site and then transport the packaged meat (easier to transport, but the meat's not fresh when it hits the market).

Still thinking on a better analogy, one that's close to the spirit of a cattle drive. Hmmm...

I just send Marin a detailed cattle drive explanation. I spared you all, but I know some people are curious. Cattle drives are fascinating. I don't mind PMing it to others who are interested. It basically boils down to 1. they send them to the mountains to save on feed for the summer 2. possible dangers include: getting lost, cattle getting stolen or killed, and riders are secluded for the duration of the drive, so any medical emergency may result in death if not careful. This year one of the cowboys had a minor stroke, which was a big deal considering he was an hour away from a hospital and it's hard to get to the riders because they're pretty far from the road. There are probably more dangers I just didn't remember while writing this.

Space Cows - with astro helmets on. Gliding through space, kicking aimlessly as they float about. That's why you gotta herd 'em. They just kinda float around all over the place. If they are alien Space Cows, then they can be pink.

Space Cows could also be a slang term for space cowards. I see a comedy in the making.

Doing my part to hit 2500...
Nothing else to add. Although I sent my VP app at 11:35, I fully expected results for Q1 & Q2 to hit at 11:36.

I saw a new press release on PRWeb today, but it was just a guy promoting his novel based on his HM entry. False alarm...

Haven't read Warbreaker yet, however, I really, really enjoyed the Mistborn series (another interesting magic system). Right now I'm in the middle of a few books--a horrible habit--all different genres.

I've gone back to Ben Bova's Grand Tour series: nitty gritty Hard SF in the style I like best. I just reread Moonrise and Moonwar, and now I'm going back and picking up the stories I missed in the stores before. I love the Kindle for keeping up with series!

I'm reading mostly romances and thrillers these days. Working my way through Jeffery Deaver's books right now. Finished up all the Alex Cross books by Patterson recently. Almost all the way through Sanford's Prey series as well (17 of the 21 books read so far).

I LOVED Mistborn. I started and finished Lost Boys by Orson Scott card today, and it was awesome and freaky. Card has such a gift for dialogue. Last night I read "That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made" by Eric James Stone and enjoyed THAT immensely.

I've had trouble reading anything besides short stories lately, and I'm happy that my quick novel reading hasn't completely left me.

I also loved Mistborn. Didn't finish Warbreaker, though...maybe I'm just not much of an epic fantasy person. But give me something by David Gemmell, and I'll squee like an anime fangirl.

It isn't science fiction, but I just recently finished The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. Awesome, awesome book. The one before that was Ali and Nino by Kurban Said, otherwise known as the Romeo and Juliet of the Caucasus.

If you want to try something by Dave Farland, I heartily recommend On My Way to Paradise. I don't know what it is, but there's something about that novel that makes me keep coming back. I've lost count of how many times I've read it, and the longest I've gone between reads is about 18 months. Good stuff--incredibly violent, possibly more so than anything else I've ever read, but really, really good.

I own every Terry Pratchett book written. I started Discworld in the 90's and I literally spent hundreds tracking down his old stuff. This was before you could buy everything on Amazon. Awesome stuff.

I had a crazy dream last night. I dreamt that the list of finalists came out. I looked at the list and I was #3 on a list of 7. I asked where was #8 and was told they were revising the story. I know makes no sense, but hey, it's my crazy dream in this crazy quarter. wotf019

Just returned from a marathon session at work to find... nothing. wotf014 It is totally appropriate that my 100th post is on the q1-v29 forum. Just hope my 200th isn't here as well! I have made good use of the time waiting for results. I've researched how to milk a cow. Some stories require odd little touches. wotf007
