Would they really hold up on the announcement if they can't contact someone by phone? Because I'm halfway around the world and the only way to contact me is by email...

It seems the preference is to contact the finalists before they're announced, but I think if you couldn't be contacted by phone you would have been e-mailed. It's a courtesy to the finalists, not a law.

I'm beginning to wonder about Tina's theory that Farland didn't start reading until the contract was finalized. That would mean a couple more weeks to read the errant paper subs and to decide on the hold pile before Q1 results come out.

And probably months before the Q2 results come out.

And there are a few people who are conspicuously absent from this conversation. MOMuriel normally likes to tease that she knows something (and since she's been to the workshop twice as a winner in both the illustrator's and the writer's competitions, she typically does know something.)

Can't really know if they've just given up obsessing or they're intentionally silent. Personally, if it was me (which it's not, remember I wasn't in Q1), I would disappear. It would be too hard to watch everyone wonder and not be able to spill. Though, if someone more clever than me (ie all of you) knew something, they might keep posting like they've got no idea. Then you wouldn't draw attention to yourself.

I've been wondering if this means those of us who haven't heard anything by now are pretty much destined for SHM or SF. I figure they must be contacting the Finalists, so at this point there are one or more they can't reach and that is the hold up.

Although I hope I'm wrong and still manage a coveted finalist slot.

I've also been watching the topics they choose to post on. One, say, may take part in playful speculations about the length of the forum or take part in congratulatory messages, but not in speculations as to who and why and when the results will come out. Of course some regularly say NNINN or they may stop saying it. Maybe I should write a mystery instead. Have to do something during my writing breaks while we wait for some news. sigh. Back to my one-page synopsis of a 130,000 + word novel.

would it be bad form to call Joni and ask for a status update on the contest? I have a workshop in a week or so and wanted to take this story along. But until this is settled....

I might have been the last person here to do that, and I received a response May 13. Joni said the results would be out "soon" and to "hang in there." Take that for what it's worth.

I would advise against it. Joni's busy, and she doesn't need more busy.

And if it helps any... I won't divulge who, but I know someone who asked quite recently and was told "they are still in the middle of judging and likely won't have results for a little while yet". That was this week.

Someone who asked Joni? Because if they asked Joni and Joni said "they are still judging" that suggests the finalist have been sent to the other judges.

But then, if someone asked a random contest-affiliated person and that person said "they" it's less indicative of the status.

Okay, I'm just joking, I'll stop. It had been a while since I helped add to the page count.

I wonder if Evil Martin was the one who asked? .... But I also have another theory on who it is that I won't post because it is just too theoretical.

My guess is that there is still a finalist spot or two that needs filling and they have too many stories to put in those one or two spots. It's inevitable that Dave would have different tastes than KD and she would have already chosen a few finalists in her "for sure" finalists pile, so that left very little for Farland to put in. You'd think that would make the choice easier, but it probably made it a lot harder for him.

Also Dave just posted on Facebook he just finished his screenplay for Runelords and is going to be making trips to hollywood soon. He also has goals to finish the next rune lords book in July. He also has two weeklong workshops coming up (August and Septemeber). Both are novel rewrite workshops that will require him to read the first 100 pages of each participants novels and edit 50 of those pages.

This is going to be a long summer.

I've been silent because I'm in Ontario, Canada, and tend not to be around much. I've been stalking the forum though! Unfortunately the only news I could possibly give is that we're probably in for the longer wait, and you already knew that.

Right now I'm working on screenplays. A bit of a diversion, I know. *shrugs*

Thanks. That actually helps a lot. I'll stop trying to lobotomize myself with a screwdriver. I suspect volume 29 will have multiple editors listed on the cover (as in some years past). On the up side, maybe we really will get to page 100. (no! put that screwdriver down!)
