@bootzenkatzen Do you know of any general studies regarding combining species to fight medical conditions?  I know it sounds more fictional that realistic but I have some of that in my short story and finding resources that explain it in detail or possible past work would help so I can make my character transformations see more believable.

I'm not sure I'm going to find exactly what you're looking for, but I'll do some poking around.  If you want to try looking for some things yourself, I'd recommend this website built for looking for scientific papers:  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ keywords you might want to look for would be "transgene" or "transgenic" which would get you papers on genes being transplanted into different model organisms (mice, zebrafish, fruit flies, etc). You can also look for CRISPR which is the newest form of gene editing, but that will also get you papers on using CRISPR for gene therapy, so you'd probably have more to dig through.

Mostly it's less about "combining" two species, and more about taking a gene from one species and putting it into another to see how it affects them - oftentimes a human gene that causes a specific disease put into a mouse, so that we can have a model for the disease to work with, e.g. human oncogenes, genes involved in sickle cell anemia, Charcot-Marie Tooth disease, as well as a lot of other rare diseases.

The other big one people think of is when we put genes that generate fluorescent proteins from jellyfish, or other species, into a mouse. This can be ubiquitous expression, making the whole mouse glow, or linking that fluorescence to a specific gene, so we can see where that gene is expressed in the body. (Link to paper on fluorescent proteins) Look for the "brainbow" mouse to see a really cool and colorful example.
