I am saddened to hear of the loss of Mike Resnick. His daughter, Laura Resnick, announced that he died today, January 9th, 2020, a little after midnight. He is a legend in the field of science fiction. He was also a Writers of the Future Contest judge. Here is his daughter's post on Facebook.

On a personal note, he was one of the four judges that had given me my WotF win. I was so looking forward to meeting him and thanking him at the gala, but he fell ill and could not attend. I had heard he was recovering well, and believed I would get that chance to thank him in the future. Sadly, that will not be the case. My sincere condolences to his friends and family. He touched many lives, and he will be missed.

I never met or interacted with him, but I have heard nothing but good of him. I'm so sorry to hear he's gone. Wishing all the peace in the world to his family and friends.

Man....I'm sorry to hear this....such a sad day...
I'm sad to hear this. Words often fail me when it comes to someone's passing, and this is no exception. Mike will definitely be missed.
If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it. ~ H.G. Wells
If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. ~ Mark Twain

Mike did a lot of paying it forward, both with Galaxy's Edge, and here. Highly respected, widely published, a legend... and he stops by this forum to help us who are just getting started. While some professionals only deal with Those Who Already Are, Mike saw us as Those Who Could Be.

Wow. Kind of feels like there's a hole in the world. I hope everyone close to him is able to grieve productively.

I never got to meet him but kept running across excerpts relating what a kind and generous writer he was. I really liked his work at Galaxy's Edge and Seven Gorges is one of the best shorts I've ever read. Fair winds Mike. I hope other successful writers and editors follow your example of paying it forward.

A legend and not just on this forum.
I suddenly feel the need to re-read some of his stuff. A special kind of immortality when you think of it.
Though if people remember me by what I wrote, I'm kinda in trouble...

For living writers, Galen, it's not what we have written, it's what we're about to write.
Cheers!
