The story is obviously part of a larger narrative. It could even be the first chapter of a book.
I'm curious to know if judges would look favorably on this sort of story, which opens many threads but closes few of them.
Not sure the judges would know exactly. Unless it ends with riders heading for their next adventure, etc. However, there have been several winners who sent in first chapters, etc. and changed the ending to have a denouement, then opened it back up for the novel. You'd not be the first to have success with an excerpt if it worked out -- Patrick Rothfuss springs to mind, as I believe his winning entry was taken from The Name of the Wind. There was a whole hullabaloo about that later, as it meant that part of his novel had been published before, which excluded it from contention for one of either the Hugo or Nebula award categories (I forget which).
Can't imagine he'd be particularly upset, though, under the circumstances.
