This was a great event. Thank you WotF for hosting and Tim and Rob for taking the time.
My big takeaways:
- Wield your words well. Better to have a shorter well written story, than a longer meandering tale.
- Believable dialogue. If someone would never, ever say that in real life, then don’t write it in dialogue.
- Read your story out loud.
- Wit is good, but not necessarily humor.
- Limited 3rd person POV best fits most stories. The viewpoint is like a camera with the only sensory input being that of the character.
- Read. Read a lot. When you've had enough, keep reading.
Note: I am so confused with POVs; third-person limited, third-person close, third-person omniscient, first-person, and second-person. Does anyone have a good short story example of second-person POV they can suggest?

Is there a recording?

There's one in a recent WOTF. I think V38. Will try to find it for you when I'm home next week. Essentially, it uses "you ..." instead of "he ..."

Thanks a lot for the notes. I'm from the UK so although I wanted to attend I knew I'd already be asleep when the event started (about 12.45am for me).

I hadn't realized that Writers of the Future didn't record this panel discussion. I myself did record the audio as Tim, Joni, and I made the presentation. If someone's got the bandwidth to host the file online, I'll happily send the .mp3 along (it's about 80 megabytes). I don't see a way to attach it to this message.

Hello! Sure go ahead and send me the file ([email protected]) and I will see how I can add it here! I can also check with John if they have a video version of this as well.
@robert-j-sawyer was so kind as to send over the file so for anyone who missed it you can now listen to it here:

@robert-j-sawyer thank you for recording and sharing this. I needed it!
Thanks for the connection, Jason. Any insight judges provide is well worth listening to.
Robert J Sawyer, Tim Powers and Joni. Very entertaining.
At the end I went to the more options button and listened at 1.5 speed. That gave me a laugh.
