A Side Benefit of Dictation (for me)

A side benefit of dictation (for me) is I can also get exercise. I may not be Kevin J. Anderson, hiking the Rockies as he dictates chapters; but I do OK on the treadmill! These are snapshots of my session last night and tonight...

Cumulative:

  • 2 hours, 56 minutes dictating on the treadmill.
  • 6.43 miles walked, from 0 to 15% elevation and 2-3 m.p.h.
  • 986 calories burned.
  • 9,950 words dictated.

I would have gone another 15 minutes tonight, but my treadmill was literally starting to smoke! (It's overdue for lubrication.)

I also dictate while driving. Anytime I have a tedious task that doesn't need my full attention, I can dictate, with rates from 35 to 65 words per minute. Typical rate is 35-40 wpm for driving, 55 wpm for the treadmill, and 65 wpm sitting in a quiet room.

I can hear the question now: If you can get 65 wpm just sitting, why not just do that? I could, but then I wouldn't burn 500 calories per session! Dictation makes exercise easier. I don't notice the passage of time.

As always, your milage may vary.

(I refuse to apologize for that one...)

I would imagine the more productive your exercise, the less productive your WPM, as your ability to breathe would limit your ability to speak.

Nice work!

My preferred way of exercising is walking over seven miles, while pushing 40lbs of golf equipment around a course. 2 days a week are practice and two are for tournaments. For my practice rounds I plan to learn to dictate while I play. I'm not kidding, I'm even going to mount a gopro on my golf cart to get video for the occasional miracle shot. This is a product waiting to be initiated. Kevin J Anderson hikes and writes, Martin Shoemaker talks while driving, and I'm going to golf while talking to myself in public. This could get interesting.

I'm OK dictating at 3 m.p.h. for a few minutes, on the level. After that I definitely get winded.

Above 3 m.p.h., I degrade quickly.
