I used to go to hatrack now and then but it's closed down. Forward motion too but that seems to have gone as well. Even absolute writes water cooler is in pieces.
So no. Not at the moment.

Another awesome but defunct online group was Liberty Hall Writers. Man, I miss that one. Guess this isn't actually helping though. Have you tried Critters? Or Baen's Bar?

I found a huge one recently, with over a hundred thousand posts, but like two from 2021. Made me sad.
I pose this question to myself, if forums are old tech, what is the new? Is it all Facebook now? Groups with members who already know each other? I figure something took their place, but I haven't yet figured out what.

@axeminister I'd be willing to bet that things like Facebook groups took over a lot of the traffic... my writer's ring makes use of a Discord chat, but we got to know each other here/at Superstars.
If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it. ~ H.G. Wells
If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. ~ Mark Twain

I'm a member of that group. It has its ups and downs but I have made some good connections for beta reading and manuscript exchange. I feel that it is the best writing group on FB that is genre specific. I like the camaraderie here better, though.

Scribophile is good. There are a few main forums which are busy, then forums within groups by genre or story type. you have to join but can for free. Having been there a while, the same topics get raised again and again, and there are a few 'literary' types who occasionally sneer at simple questions.

I agree. I’m in that group too and it’s nothing like this one. I feel much safer doing crit exchanges here, probably because we’re all focused on the competition and there’s strong support on producing quality work, and a stable sense of what that is. The workshop was a complete game changer for me. I fell in love with writing again because of it.
I’d like to find a great discord group. The one I’m in doesn’t have the right chemistry for me, I think.

I imagine Codex is still around and hoppin'. That's a little more business oriented, if I remember correctly, but member count was pretty high.

And you have to have at least one pro sale, as I recall. I joined, but the place is so convoluted, you need a guide. Alex Shvartsman was mine, but I knew he was a busy writer and editor and I didn’t want to make demands on his time. But Critters is pretty straightforward as a critique group. Then again, so are we. ?

I used to float on the Penny Arcade writers forum, but it has well and truly died. I migrated over to the WotF forums as my main writing home before the rot had set in, but I think the writing people there just drifted away, some turning pro, some becoming editors, others preferring to hang out in live chat streams rather than on the forums. I'm still in touch with a few of those writers through Twitter, though.
I was briefly on the Toasted Cheese forums as well, but it didn't really lean into the kind of style I was going for, so that didn't last long for me.
Pretty much, these days, the WotF forums are the ones I haunt.

Yes, the most useful writing discussion forums/servers all seem to share a goal or a teacher. Without agreement on what makes good writing, it seems you either get very shallow advice or arguing.
I like KM Weiland's Facebook group. It seems to be very friendly to beginner questions.
Cat Rambo has a large and active Discord community. As a newcomer to Discord I find it overwhelming, but I'm sure it is the perfect fit for someone reading this thread.
And /r/PubTips over on reddit is interesting if you're at the querying stage.
